G'day,

Just a few questions about dual channel, because i'm thinking of looking into gettin into more RAM.

I currently have 1.25GB ram (1GB stick and a 256, weird combo, I know)
What is dual channel?
How does it work?
What are the advantages of it?
Is it true I need (for example) 4 512 sticks of the same type for it to work?

thanks,
Jack

think of single channel RAM as a 2 lane highway
think of dual channel Ram as an 8 lane interstate

it increases the amount of info that can be transfered at once.
it makes things go alot faster
they sell dual channel 2 GB sets with (2) 1GB sticks

Righto, thanks. How would I set up dual channel once I get them, or does it just set it up by itself?

It should be done automatically. Bear in mind that it only works if the two mems are of the same type (and size)

It sets up like any other RAM, just plug and play.  One thing to watch for is that your board supports it, I know that on Asus boards you have a max of 2 - 1GB sticks, even though you have four slots for RAM.  So the board can handle 4GB but only 2GB of dual channel.

More questions:

How do I know what kind of RAM my computer supports? Or is most of it all the same?

u cant put DDRII in the same slot as you put DDR you will have 2 go and buy a new motherboard that supports DDRII unless you got a  Gigabyte Duo board which has slots for both like mine, you need at least a LGA775 Socket processor motherboards for 476 etc. do not suppoty DDRII, or the equivalent AMD one ( i dont know much about AMD)! You are going to have to probably get a whole new processor, mobo and u might aswell upgrade to PCI-Express if you havent got it yet! So get spending have a look on www.overclockers.co.uk and you can see they do motherboard, RAM, Processor packages then all you need is the GPU and u can use all your old drives and stuff! Hope this helps!

Well I just found out that my motherboard supports

Four 184-pin DDR SDRAM DIMM sockets
Support for DDR 400, DDR 333, and DDR 266
Support for up to 4 GB of system memory
