I downloaded it off limewire, scanned for viruses, it checked out.  When i'm trying to use it, I put a video into the timeline, then my cursor turns into a loading cursor and then it says "Windows Movie Maker encountered and error and needs to close" and then I send an error report and it closes and this happens EVERY time I put a video into the timeline.  Why the fuck does it do this, it's REALLY making me angry because I don't know of any other free, easy to use editing software.

It didn't come with mine.  I recently had to reinstall windows and there was no WMM in it.

Edit: WMM is already included with XP, Which service pack are you running?.

I personally don't trust things like Limewire. I use authentic software.

As for your problem, what type of movie clip are you trying to load, what size/how long is it, and how long did it take for the program to lock up?

WMM sucks... Get Adobe Premier Pro or Pinnacle Studios or something...

SP2, I had to install it from Windows though.  HP's system restoration software came with XP SP1.  WMM was not in mine though.  This computer is from 2004.

I've done my research, WMM is included in XP SP2. So I'm not sure why you don't have it. Update perhaps?

I think that some of the problems may be your particular system. Depends on your specs though. It could be your GPU (maybe not enough display horsepower? Mine gets the job done, but lags sometimes). You also have to have enough memory for the program to work. I have 1GB and it barley gets the job done. I rarley lock up, but it has happened.

Back to my origional question, what type of file/ what length/size was it? That could be your problem.

It's a short 3 second video I took using the full version of Fraps.  I want to put in the Korean version of "Ready, Steady, Go" by Paul Oakenfield eventually but right now i'm just tryinbg to get it to work.

So its an AVI file. I load those all the time. Minimal lock up. What are your system specs?

Edit (to prevent double post): Try this, it could boost the performance of the software.

Open up WMM, click on the Tools menu. Then Options. Capatability Tab, look down for DivX AntiFreeze Filter. Click the check box, then okay. Now close WMM, right click on your desktop. Properties, then Settings. Click Advanced. Troubleshoot tab, and turn your hardware accelertation all the way up.

See if that helps you out.

If that dosen't work, click here. Thats the link to the Microsoft Download center for WMM version 2.1, which may solve your problem too. It says it was available through Automatic Updates, or you can order a SP2 CD for free.

I say update your system. you should get it w/ sp2. If you cannot update for a reason we all know about, go buy xp.

_j5689_ , Read my edit up there ^^.

Also, I found another helpful link. Read through it, it probably will answer your questions if my suggestions didn't. Here it is.

I hope this helps you out. Only thing, don't reduce your hardware acceleration settings like he suggests, it could cause your system to not recognize your GPU.

Good luck.

I am running Windows XP SP2, 2.2GHz P4, 2GB of PC2700 RAM, Radeon 9600.  There was no Compatability tab in the options window.

Edit: There's no compatability tab because i'm using 2.0 not 2.1, most of the 2.1 I downloaded on Limewire were viruses so I decided to simply dl 2.0 instead.

Okay, thats weird...

Do the hardware acceleration boost (If you can, with a 9600, it may already be at max). Check out the link I enclosed (the second one). Try whats there. That may help out.

I just edited my post, I found out why I couldn't change compatability.

I see. Well, if you can't use the links that I provided, un-install WMM and then do an automatic update. You should then recieve 2.1 and your problem should be over. If not, get the free CD from Microsoft and re-install SP2. Again, here is the link to do that.

I don't know, but I'd suggest it, just to be sure.
