so all those people all get together and play quake on lan, why not just play on the internet so you save so much time and effort ? just a thought.

We don't play just Quake lots of other games as well, I guess you don't understand the concept of a LAN party. LAN = 0 Ping and file transfers at 100mbit/sec that you won't ever get on your DSL or Cable.
Not to mention all the cool people you meet and the social aspects of a LAN.

Nice hotel + Large AC system = A nice and cool room. It didn't get over 70 the whole time in that room.
