I'm curious to know what sort of earthquake preparedness/education countries outside NZ have?  I'm thinking along the lines of basic stuff that you're taught during your school years.  I'm partilcularly interested in what those who live on/near faultlines (eg. LA/San Francisco) have to say but of course anyone is welcome to pipe up

When I was younger it was typically along the lines of where to take shelter if indoors, what to put in a survival pack & where to put it etc.  Currently I have all my gear (tent/sleeping bag/clothes/food/water/etc) all in a tramping pack that I know I'll be able to access from my intended "ah fuck the roofs caving in" safety point.

And also, how many of you have heard of the "triangle of life" theory?  What do you think of it?

i live in Montana USA, 3rd most active Earthquake zone in the USA..

my wife goes crazy, and i just say, "God Damn it" procede to grab my gunbelt, badge and keys to patrol car.

All of the "Oh shit" gear is inside my truck, i've got everything from climbing gear, a firearm, camping equipment, MREs (meals ready to eat, or by Marine Corps standards meals rejected by everyone) tools to fix the truck, some spare parts. pretty much i could survive everything from nuclear war, major earthquake, alien invasion, invasion by another country..

The reason for all of this stuff having been relocated to my truck; Mrs S3v3N, "JESUS CHRIST PUT THIS SHIT AWAY AND I DON'T MEAN STUFF IT IN THE GARAGE"

In Tennet Creek in the NT earthquakes occasionally scare the shit out of the locals, but no real plan to speak of. They happen in Tennet Creek because it's roughly the centre of the tectonic plate thing that Aus sits on.

Oh and way off topic, Pubic check me sig and join the comp.
Whoa... Can't believe these forums are still kicking.

i live in the bay area near san fransisco, and people hardly seem to care, everyone i have asked has no plan or seems to take it that seriously... i really wanna know what to do when there is a quake, i hear the best thing is to get under a sturdy table and hold on, yet i doubt my kitchen table could withstand the roof and the floor above me, so what will i do when there is a quake? get crushed probably, which is a huge fear for me living in this area

I always seem to be taking a shit when the quaking starts.  So that's my plan -- never shit again.  A-Ha!

Edit: No, seriously.  I didn't mean my shits are so powerful they're like an earthquake, or something retarded like that.  I really am almost always on the crapper when they hit.

When i was a kid it was hiding under tables/door frames and getting outside in an open area (away from buildings). I prefer getting outside

I live about 40mins south of San Francisco in a city called Menlo Park. . .

In grammar school we were taught to get under your desk, and cover your head etc.

If your standing, they say go over and stand in the treshold of a door, as the treshold of the door is really sturdy!

I mean, If you feel the house is going to fall on you, you try and find the closest thing you can to get under that will withstand something falling, ie huge table etc.  If you are on the street, your supposed to move as far as you can from power lines and buildings as possible.  But the idea is to find cover and stay there until the earthquake is over. . .

I was in my mom's car in 1989 when the big earthquake hit, and it was fucking scary!!! My dad was at the World Series between the Giants and A's!! Everyone in the stadium thought the place was going to collapse!!

Scary shit man, earthquakes are NO joke!!!

Pretty much all of NZ is at risk due to being on the edge of the pacific plate, two plates even overlap right where our capital sits!  My area is on a big aluvial plain, so quakes here are softened but if a big one hits there are fears it could shake up a lot of the groundwater and the city would become one big swamp agaion!

Doorways are sposed to be good yes, and if your toilet is in a seperate, small room I imagine taking a shit would be a good time for an earthquake to hit; strong construction!

We have about as much preparedness - or care-factor about earthquakes - as a sleepy ant.

Which probably isn't a good thing, considering what happened to Newcastle 10 years back...

I'm in the SF Bay Area. We were taught to find a door frame, ro something to hide under (desk, table, etc...). As far as kits, standard stuff, 3 days food, first aid kit, flashlights, things like that.

Funny thing, every earthquake, no matter what I was doing, I managed to get outside in about 2.5 seconds.

I had a tiny bit in school when I was really young. Only thing I remember is duck under a table or something like that.

We don't have earthquakes in Michigan.

In England, we know nothing about earthquakes.  Then again, we know nothing about tornados, except that they sometimes happen in Birmingham (and I'm not talking Alabama).

Earthquakes are fun!  Despite the damage and death, I actually like them, in all seriousness.

I've lived through the Loma Prieta quake back in 1989.  I lived in Los Gatos which was really close to the epicenter, and I was 5 years old.  It was scary at first, but they became more interesting when I started to learn about them.

I have backup water and non-perishable food supplies within easy access, along with a fully stocked first aid kit and working flashlights.  The only thing I haven't done is tie down my TV stand in my living room, since that would more than likely tip over in a large quake.
