G-nome (aka Peter Dickison of Australia) over at Bit-Tech has finally finished his amazing WMD mod project. His overall design goal was to create a PC which resembled a nuclear device. He outlined every step of the process with detailed pictures and descriptions. I've been following this project for nearly 2 years and it's been very interesting to see behind the scenes on everything that went into the project. Because they have a skill for it, a love for it and they enjoy doing it. Why ask why?

It's just too much. It was cool though to read his mod article and see how everything was done. Learned a couple cool tricks from reading that one. As for his next mod, he said this last month:

What's next for me IRT modding? Well, I have been involved in doing history research for a book I'm working on, and have been looking at the machinery and technology of a certain era. This has inspired me with some fun ideas, and I currently have another project in the planning stages. Once the project is well underway, I plan to document it as a worklog in the bit-tech forums. I'm rather excited about this one, as I haven't seen any mods quite like it; but, as I said, the reality is usually different to the idea! I can't wait!

That's a good mod, but some people only focus on the exterior and make no changes to the interior and just cram it in there. Especially in small mods.

Also, you guys have seen nothing yet. May I present the Project Mars City Doom 3 Mod.

It's not finished, but you can get the general idea. The worklog is great fun to watch on TBCS.

This guy did so much work, from painting to modeling to etching and even programming.

I followed that one for a long time as well. Truly amazing work, and the attention to detail is mind boggling. The motorized doors in front of the drives and LCD panel were a work of pure genius. Not to mention the mad skills that guy has with an airbrush. Thanks for posting that link, I'd almost forgotten about it. Looks like he's getting very close to being done. I suppose 2 years is nothing to a serious modder....

The front top of the case has a motorized door (like a rolltop desk) which exposes a high res LCD panel, the bottom of the case where the elevator doors are opens to expose the front fan airflow. Both are motorized and remotely controled. While opening they even play the appropriate soundfiles from the game through the case speaker.

I love extreme modding. Even if you dont like a particular theme, how can you not appreciate the workmanship and attention to minute detail that goes into these systems?

I particularly like how he's done the drawer for the Mobo. The way it just opens up and slides back at leisure... I once did something similar to an ordinary casing, just because I got sick of having to change Mobos every few months when a new one came out, I needed somethign that was fast and easy to replace... Fortunately, that's all in the past... No time for modding anymore.
But I sure like the way he has fitted in amazing details and built the entire thing from scratch it seems. I dont recongnize ANYTHING from a normal case in that build. My best "attempt" at something similar was converting a beerkeg into a PC. But at least I could fit a lot of standard stuff into one of those. This is more like a work of art.
Too bad there are so few manufacturers who dare to deviate from the stardard and make truly unique casings.
