Aight i have this problem w/ a computer i have. There was a lighting storm and 4 a short period of time i lost all power in my house. At that time all of my computers( i have 4) were on and shut off. Well when i restarted/ turned then all on, they all worked EXCEPT for one which is my dads. The problem w/ this computer is when u turn it on, it works fine 4 a while, but then shuts off without warning. Also if i leave it off 4 like 2 hours, ill get 2 hours on that computer until it just shuts off. I have no clue what to do or whats causing this problem. All i know is that this lighting storm probably damaged some chip or the comps memory of some kind. Can some1 help me or give me some ideas hwo to fix this problem? & no i cant get a new comp caz its my dads and all his shit(work) is on there and if i dont fix it soon i dont know what he will do to me....so can some1 help me? ill give karma +1 4 any GOOD advice/ideas.
start with the power supply. Swap it from one of the good machines to test.
Start by testing the PSU as the source of the problem. You should be able to use one of the PSUs from one of your other computers. If it still does the same thing, my guess is most likely that the mobo got fried.
ok can any1 else help me? ill give that a try.
the power supply is most likely toast, hence the delay in it shutting down. Other problems could be blown caps on the motherboard, or..... well, actually, with what you described, it's one of those two.
If you have 4 computers in the house, there's no problem with your dad's data. Just take the HD out of his machine and slave it into another machine, and *presto* his data is available.
For pics of what to look for, see below.
DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES DISASSEMBLE YOUR POWER SUPPLY!!!!

You should invest in a surge protection extension lead too, hey it's cheaper than UPS.
Mobo frying would almost certainly not allow you to run your computer. If I were a betting man (which I am, I mean William Bennett style) I would bet the farm on the PSU.Timelord_ wrote:

I worked retail computer repair for 2 years. You'd be amazed what a computer with blow caps is capable of doing.KEN-JENNINGS wrote:
