Hello everyone... I have a problem with my DVD Writer

I got it for my birthday about 4 months ago. I installed it myself, and everything was fine. I used it to burn DVDs, and it was also my main DVD drive. I didn't use it for about 2 weeks, and yesterday when I wanted to use it, I put a CD in it, but it's like I didn't put any disk in it.

I checked the Windows explorer, and my DVD is mapped to the F: So Windows physically know there's a DVD drive in my computer. But when I put a disk in it, and click on the F:, nothing. There's no data. And you dont hear the sound of a CD spinning inside. I thought it might be the connection somehow between the board and the DVD drive, so I tried to plug an older DVD drive and BANG, it works perfectly fine. So it looks like there's might be a problem with my DVD Writer...

Anyone ever seen this? Is my DVD Writer kaput already? What can I do beside praying?

I think you have answered your own question ... looks like the CD drive motor is not engaging ... which means that it needs replacement.

Anyway, that's my best guess.  Sorry ...

It's either the motor or an internal connection problem, your best bet is to get a new one under warranty.

This may be time to track down whoever gave you the gift.

Above posters are right though, it's probably the drive's motor or some other malfunction in the drive. Contact the person who gave you the drive to get the receipt (or anything so you can get it repaired or get another drive under the warranty coverage). If they already got rid of the proof of purchase, just blackmail them into buying you another dvd writer.

Everyone has some dirty secrets they're willing to pay for not to have them exposed.

Anyway Thanx for the advices. I guess I'll see with my friends what we can do about this.
