I'd want to see some near future, something like 2042. That way it's not too ridiculous. I just can't see myself enjoying a game that came from a WWII shooter and eventually evolved into fighting robots...
Same era as bf2 but with as many people as possible, imagine 500 guys running about ffs! It would make for a vastly different game and would be manic as fuck.

First World War 1914-18 - Again, boring. Trench "warfare" was living for months in dirt and occassionally throwing a grenade or two. If you were lucky you got to man the machine guns. MG whores.
Second World War 1939-45 - BF1942, done.
Korea 1950s - Interesting, but not many major flashpoints.
Vietnam 1960s/70s - BF:V, done.
Cold War 1980s (US v Russia) - Korea + Vietnam = Cold War Conflicts.... Unless you want stuff like Russians versus Czechs, Slavs, Hungarians, Kurds, Turks, etc.
First Gulf War 1991 - Doable, but kind of limited to map variation/type of battle.
Modern (like BF2) - BF2, done.
Near Future 2042 - Interesting, but there'd need to be something that really brings the pizazz to separate it from BF2 and '2142.
Far Future 2242 - BF2142, will be done.

Technically, Battlefield 2142 is BF4. It is the fourth game in the series. The game we are playing right now that happens to be called Battlefield 2 is actually Battlefield 3.

Actually, a BF series quite a bit in the future might be interesting...could you imagine the types of maps / terrains that would be available?...different worlds, different weapons, different challenges...don't fear change...change is good.
