I'm a crap shot. And I know it. I can't snipe worth a damn. So I counter-snipe. Because snipers generally have their eyes in their scope and are usually sitting still enough that I can hit them. In terms of teamwork I see my job as allowing the squaddies to keep their eyes on the ground without having to worry as much about whats up above.

Places I look for snipers:

Sharqi:
TV Station, Tall Waterfront Building at Hotel, the Crane (all of it), both Hills and Watertower near City Entrance, the rows of buildings between TV Station and Construction site. I think the hardest place to pick-up snipers is IN the construction site; plenty of shadows, they can hide within the structure and not poke their gun barrels out. Two places I once used to good effect - a lean-to shed roof on the west end of the construction site - had to parachute onto it and it was only 7 feet up, but it was so non-obvious I got a lot time in before someone found me. Very N00b because I could move around much. Another fun place that I used only once was the top of teh stairs leading to the terrace that houses the construction site; between the Site and the Hotel flag; near the base of the crane. I set-up a claymore down stairs and one around the corner in front of me. I had a great view into the construction site, got plenty of guys fixated on the crane and also had a good view of guys trying to come from Surveillance Post into Construction site. Also got 3 claymore kills and had both a medic and a support dude find me and keep coming back to keep me going.

Karkand:
The roof of the building at The Square is very obvious. I won't even mention the hills, because the USMC guys have little choice and have to work with what they have. The cement factory is a given, I don't even shoot, I just lob a grenade up there. Under the train. On top of the train. On top of suburbs. The best places to snipe in Karkand (IMHO) are street corners and doorways.

Wake:
Too fluid - I hardly ever have to go CounterSniper here. Places I check are usually sandbagged forts, hills behind the airstrip, overgrown plane wrecks, buildings with steps.

Mashtuur:
Hills behind the hotel, the water tower, the tall building, the tall bridge, blah blah. Again, better off with street corners in this map and keep moving. Theres a particular corner between Hotel and Mosque that looks straight down the flag, from a fair distance. That's useful. Again its a fluid map.

Kubra Dam:
Snipers Heaven. Don't bother with the cranes, if you can't find anywhere better don't be a sniper on this map. One of the best uses for snipers on this map (IMHO) is to call in arty and airstrikes. No further comment.

Zatar:
The oil towers are all too obvious. The gillie suits show-up against the sandstone hills easily too.

Oman:
The tall Hotel building and the crane are where I check first. then the hill over the River flag. And the warehouse roof. The hills around the Hotel and behind the airstrip. The two best places I found here are (for countersniping) the top floor of the construction site building (NOT the roof). You can set a claymore for defence on the stairs, then with a little moving around you can cover the river forts, warehouse, crane, and crane flag. If you get someone capping the flag from within that dumpster you can lob a grenade in, and you can cover the other building on the other side of the flag, and pop anyone that tries to steal the APC. The most fun place I found for regular sniping was on the railway tracks between Hotel and the nearest beach fort. On one sode of teh tracks are three large bushes. You blend in really well and have a good view of the beach fort. It was so good I had FAVs and infantry pass me and not notice. IMHO the best places for snipers on this map is behind the walls of the beach forts, being defensive and spotting enemy movements for the team; lets you stay mobile.

I think I've babbled long enough, I doubt anyone is reading.

Last one worth mentioning though...

Mass Destruction. The Railyards Flag. Theres a Stinger Site up on a terrace, at the bend in the road. I find it good because you can defend the flag from there, get guys coming from the substation island, spot enemy armour and leap onto the stinger if the gunship comes close. Heh - spot the team player.

Some good observations there.

In case you didn't know most snipers turn dynamic shadows off; bingo, problem solved. The game looks a bit crap but it's worth the added visibility IMO... what used to be shadowed recesses of buildings where a prone figure was a dark blob on a dark background are now a light area with a dark blob sticking out like a sore thumb!

I like to crouch instead of prone(not so good if it is a short building).  You can move back from the edge and closer to objects on the roof that will cut your silo-et.

Crouching is definitely a better option at times since you don't then become long and flat and stick out on either side of a small bit of cover.

I wish I could send videos to snipers I've shot in the foot, elbow or whatever... Hang on a second, what am I saying? I don't want them to realise!

edit: speaking of wake, you can also snipe from between the pile of rocks on the arty island. your nearly invulnerable there when arty rains on your head or when a j-10 does its minutely bombing run.
yeah, until the freaking Z-10 comes over and rapes the shit out of you.

The towers on Ghost Town on the island near the SAS base give a very good view of the waterfront.

Well, its kind of a commander with sniper kit spot. On Warlord, go in front of the TV Station, and theres a crashed Black Hawk. Go to the spot where its facing the SAS HQ and theres and Inward Bend, and go RIGHT INBETWEEN the bend. Go prone, and crawl into it, and theres about 4 extra Ft of space UNDER the blackhawk. Then, before you go under, place some claymore so your enemy cant get to you, then, if your REALLY good, you can drop a supply box in front of the entrance, so you cant get out but the enemy cant get in. Plus. your SUPER SAFE from Arty Strikes.

Enjoying this thread.
Been playing sniper more again so gets blood going.

Definitely keep away from obvious cranes/hills majority of time.
There's one hallway passage on Karkand that has been quite good to me at times.
Found that spot up from Suburb occassional use.
Sometimes being out in open blends right in.

Yeah i kno i will just tell you my best spot The main thing about sniping (In real life at least) is concealment so why would anyone go out of their way to tell you where they are gonna be layin???

man bitch you guys are all whacked. everyone knows the best spot is directly behind your enemy so that your rifle is scratching his back.

Gah! Changing the video settings? I'm not sure if I'm annoyed by this because it's practically exploiting, or if it's because I didn't think of it!

I won't do it anyway, feels too much like going against the spirit of the game.

I learned the gun barrel trick from a declassified CIA assassination manual about 14 years ago. Always stay back from the edges, limit your silhouette, limit your visibility from angles other than where your target will be, and stay in the shadows. Don't move unless you absolutely have to; I've found this works very well in BF2; many an infantryman or chopper will ignore me if I don't shoot or move a muscle - it's amazing that they don't even put the crosshairs on the "suspicious bush" or pump a couple of rounds in on principle (I have a fair few sniper kills just from doing that, costs me next to nothing and could save my life).

One rule of mine I do break is when counter-counter-sniping. I'll use an obvious location; usually the TV Station in Sharqi. I'll go up to the top where I'm nice and visible, then drop behind the parapet. Then sight-up, pop-up, scan a short arc for counter-snipers quickly, drop down, shuffle sideways, and repeat, scanning a little more arc and shuffling a different amount, different direction each time. When I find one I aim, pop down (without moving the mouse) then pop-up without the shuffle double-check and fire.

Sometimes a better sniper will get me. But I'm cool with that, they deserve the kill. Other times the enemy attackchopper will come and camp. Then its usually time for a new spawn point and a new kit.

Although the first rule of sniping is "rooftops are bad" I think there are several excellent rooftop positions on karkand as it's possible to get to some tricky positions where nobody expects you.

e.g.
All the rooftops at the start of town: Almost nobody seems to realize that anyony is there or that you can even get up there, you can snipe on incoming marines, protect the hotel flag and both streets including some sideways. It's likely to be there a whole round getting lots of kills without even being noticed.

The rooftop of the last house in the hotel road (right side, vis-a-vis with the square building, has some arabic writing on the roof). You can't get there normally but with a dropped vodnik it's possible (not a glitch) but I guess it won't be possible in 1.4 anymore.

Remember that most of my comment was from the position of a counter-sniper

But it's fair enough! I find on Mashtuur that the lack of Uncaps makes the battle far more mobile and fluid than most other maps. Thus I find most overwatch positions on that map will at some point get too far from the battlelines to remain useful - and I don't simply mean in terms of killing enemy soldiers. As a sniper, with the most powerful optical device in the game, I see my role for the team as recon and strategic targetting - I'll spot enemy movements to the minimap for my teammates and use command functions to call for arty, UAV or supplies to points where I can see need it. With the sniper scope anyone can make these placements very accurately.

A position high in the centre of the map would be useful to a sniper, but once discovered could be a trap. Spots only accessible via helo or parachute are difficult to get into stealthily, and often give you away to the countersniper (or the guy with the grenade launcher).

Based on your comment I'll definitely be taking another look at Mashtuur... maybe I'll see you around

At the start of the Karkand game these are also excellent spots for AT Gunners. In fact, playing the Hotel Defense strategy, these are great places for almost anyone, particularly Sniper, AT and Support. A lot of teams I play now simply cede the Hotel to USMC and hold a line at the Square and Suburbs (the open spaces give MEC armour the mobility advantage while keeping the USMC armour confined between buildings as they advance).
