Well I got 1GB of RAM not too long ago. When I got it, I took the 256MB RAM I already had in, out. So now I only have 1GB of RAM on my comp. Would it help loading times for Bf2 or anything at all if I put the 256MB or RAM back in? Just so I could save money and not have to buy 1 more GB of RAM.
Is it the same speed as the 1GB stick? If it is, it never hurts to add more ram with the same speed.

Need more info. What is the model of your MoBo? Is your 1GB ram a single stick or two 512 sticks? Are all of the sticks of ram rated at the same speed (ie PC3200, PC4000 etc)? In many cases if the 256 ram is slower than the 1GB your system would recognize all of the RAM at the slower speed. In any case, you will probably not notice much difference with or without.
We should make a rule where before you post your problem or help, you must post your specs. Make that a sticky up top, so that we dont waste all this time helping them find out what hardware they have, etc. Anyone agree?
Ok I found it. The 1 GB of RAM is 2 512 sticks. The old 256MB RAM is 333MHz and the two 512 sticks are 400MHz.ShotYourSix wrote:

Don't forget the dual channel issue. If you've now got 2x512mb sticks running dual channel, adding the 256 would likely be a mistake.
Along the mobo lines, if your mobo is old enough that the new ram is already limited in function (can't run the ram at full speed, not dual channel etc), then adding the 256 back in might not hurt anything.
If you don't want to look up all your specs, just benchmark with and without the extra memory and go with whichever option gives you the best performance.

Same speed/brand go for it, cannot hurt.
They are both different speeds and different brands. The only RAM i have in now is two 512MB sticks.

If you've got 2 512s then putting any more in will break dual channel. Which is not cool, but not the hugest deal in the world, since dual channel isn't that much greater anyway. Another one or two 512s would probably be the go if you want to upgrade. In a perfect world you'd just have 2 1gb sticks. Also, I would be buying the same sticks as you already have, although odds on you'd be fine if you got a cheaper brand.

I was wonderin what the 184pin and the DIMM was because there is nothing like that on the package of the two sticks of 512 MB RAM I recently got. They are the same brand tho. Would this one stick in the above link work with my two sticks of 512 MB??? They are the same speed and the same brand. But, would I have to get two of them to work???

Im thinking of upgrading my RAM too. You need to know if your old RAM was unbuffered, ECC or non-ECC, what the voltage was, and what the speed was, to know if the new and old RAM are compatible. And the more sticks the faster it will run, for example having 2 512's instead of just one GIG.
Right now im looking to buy two 512's for a total of a GIG. I need PC3200, 2.5 volt, unbuffered, non-ECC.

Dark_Helmet: Unless you spent a crapload on your ram it was unbuffered so dont worry about that ECC. Voltages are standardized as well so dont worry there. What you linked should do you fine, though if the game is running well for you as it is, there is really no need to buy more.ToXiC888 wrote:

This is the exact same RAM that I have in my comp right now. I have two sticks of it in right now. So now my question is: Do I need to get 2 more of those sticks (thereby bringing my total RAM stick count to 4) to make it work or just one more of those sticks (thereby bringing my total RAM stick count to 3) to make it work.
REMEMBER!!!: The link for that RAM is the same exact RAM I have in my PC right now.

If your motherboard supports dual channel you should either run 2 sticks or 4. On dual channel mobos 3 sticks will negate the dual channel advantage (still fine, just a bit slower memory performance). If it does not support dual channel then 3 sticks instead of 4 will not give you a performance hit. If in doubt, I guess go with the 2 extra sticks. 2 gig is the sweet spot for BF2 so if you can afford 2 more then I'd say go for it.
EDIT: you are looking at spending $150 for an extra gig. This is going to smooth out any stuttering and speed up load times. In general gameplay will be smoother but the difference will not be nearly as noticable as the move from 512 to 1GB was. It really should come down to your budget. If it's going to clean you out then it's probably not worth it. Otherwise, you'll have a slightly faster rig to show for it...
