Help Cougar Build a New Machine.

First, the poll is multi-select because I want to see everyone's views on Video Cards, processors, manufactoers and OS's. Select whatever you like from all 4 catagories.

I'm thinking of building a new machine because mine is getting rather old. I've had the same machine for almost three years and, frankly, I've lost touch with all the newest and greatest products and brands. I'm not sure where to start. The machine I have now has:

1.5 Gig of RAM
Intel P4 2.6 GHz processor
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro VC
Sound Blaster Audigy 2.0 SC
80 gig HD
DVD, CD RW and Burn

This was top o' the line back in the day when I got it but now it's just kind of mediocre at best. I know how often things change in the tech industry so one brand may be better than the other now or whatever part may not be as good to have as it used to be. This computer will be used souly as a gaming machine and possibly used for a bit of phot editing and movie making.

Spending limit is $2,500.

well i don't know a whole lot about computers.. but i say u go with a custom one, because then u can put w/e u want into it.. and i say u go with a top of the line vid card.. i would probably say and nVIDIA or somethin... i know this doesn't help but hey.. i tried.. lol

I just purchased the new evga 7900gt ss card and I really like it. It comes overclocked form evga to almost the specs of a 7900gtx for about 150 dollars less. I think you can purchase two of them in a set for about $800 off newegg and you get two free game titles from this yrs lineup. As far as everything else it is really up to you. I think the new intels are gonna be sweet, but cost you one of your testicles. Just get a good solid psu and a couple of 74 gb raptors. You can always find them on sale at newegg. Hell you have a pretty big budget, might want to consider getting a nice monitor as well. Dell and viewsonic make very reasonably priced 20.1 widescreen monitors. No point in getting a good video card if your displays looks like poo.

AMD X2 4800+ or cheaper but pretty good 64-4000+
Nvidia 7900 GT 256 MB (maybe 2 of them) or one single 7900 GTX 512 (awesome)
ASUS Motherboard A8n32SLI
Case whatever you like
2048 MB Corsair TwinX (good for oc and not too expensive)

But I would wait until the end of this year with a new machine. I have heard about that nVidia and Ati are going to launch their new cards at this time...and those cards would be DirectX10 capable (thinks of Crysis). But that's you choice. A 7950 GX2 (2x 7900 GTX Chips and 1 GB VRam on one card) will do fine!

AMD has nothing right now go against conroe... K8L wouldnt be released for a while, DX10 cards will be out when vista is out.. so thats next year...

Right AMDs 4x4 is a joke, because it's way to expensive and there new architecture will be released in 2006/2007. Recently a new pricelist of AMD appeared, they're going to decrease prices on their processors but not very much. An AMD FX-62 still costs 799$, for this money you get 2 Intel E6600. And we already know, the E6600 is faster and way better than the FX-62.

As for the DX10 cards - you neither need them for Windows Vista nor for Aero (Windows Vista's shiny new glass surface).
