several times i have shot at incoming planes and my tank round hit but did not kill the plane. It just made is smoke a lil bit. They need to fix this. I actually did shoot one down with a tank round but it was farther away. usually when a plane is in the range of fire of the tank it is close and low, it seems when they are close and low the tank rounds are useless!!! i don't get it.

I have the exact same prob, if some 1 is taking off in a jet 1 shell and they're fucked, but loads of time i have hit jets coming to bomb me and nothing happens they just proceed to damaging my tank, i really wanna know why this happens!
If you can shoot at a plane they are not coming in steep enough. In answer to your question, what he said.
I've taken down a bomber with the main tank cannon and a J-10 with the machine gun, both on Daqing oilfields. It definately is possible, but it requires a pilot dumb enough to fly straight at you about 10m off the ground.
I've toke the American jet down on wake using the tanks main gun.

mmm, tends to be, if u can shoot him down, he's got such an ego (usually a j-10 boy) from his apparent INVULNERABILITY, that he thinks he can take out some noob in a tank np. What i say is if u can shoot him out the sky, he's obviously not paying attention, taking one down is more luck than skill. For starters, it is practically impossible to tell how far away is he, and at what speed, and depending on your graphical setting, what angle he is coming at u. All you can do is hope that as he pulls up, try nailing him then.
Tbh i've only managed to take down a SU-34, he didnt have a co-pilot with his lazer guided missiles, as he tried to get me, i took him out as he pulled up.

Exactly. Planes are going so fast, that if your even a little behind with ping, or anything, the hitbox will be someplace else than were you hit it.ThomasMorgan wrote:

the only time I've shot a plane down was in BF'42 (I know this isn't the place for a '42 post but hey!) and I was in a destroyer and there was a zero coming in, took a shot and blew him away

I can take down choppers fairly easily with a tanks main gun now. I tend to hit them about 1 in every 3 shots (at a rough guess), but have only hit a plane once, and that shot didnt kill it. Really frustrating.

do it only if u realy realy like to do that and nothing else to do

Honestly, air assets are over powered in Battlefield in general. One rocket or tank shell would fatally cripple ANY fighter jet or military helicopter that has EVER existed, no matter where you hit it, as would a competent spray from a high calibur rifle or cannon. A good jet pilot in Battlefield 2 never gets hit by anything but other jets anyway, and attack helicopters have enough firepower to overpower any foe, especially with a competent gunner. Do they really need to be as armored as an APC as well?
once i killed a jet with at smg XD. if u see a jet just hide, nothing could be done agaist them.in some maps there are a lot of aa vehicles and aa static that are really anoying for planes and helis.
