Im new to overclocking... all i know is that it can destroy my card if i do it wrong.

with the card came a program called trixx, it helps you safely detect what is safe to use.
however during that test my screen becomes all, wierd,  green/blue/red lines through it.

now i used it to manualy set the core to 525 and the memory clock at 600Mhz. (for those who dont know: you need to double it to get the real results).

sofar it runs stable (for 6 min now xD).

im not keeping the settings like this thought. i like to know if it can harm my video card, i dont want to buy a new one

edit: (while outgame) the vpu temp is 47.9 and the board temp is 52 (celcius)

ok ... if you just bump the speeds nothing bad can really happen. it starts to get dangerous once you overvolt. As for the artifacs: you reached the limit of the oc. lower the speed or try increasing voltages (but then you need good cooling)

Hey check this tool out... I use it and it seems to work pretty good... no errors and helps you safely find your maximum overclock... http://www.techpowerup.com/atitool/

How much do you think I could safely overclock my Radeon 9600 with stock cooling for everything?

dl ATItool and try how far you can push it. you can never really tell before you try

How much more do I need to have in order to see a noticeable difference?

Damn, I overclocked the core like 14.54 more MHz and now the heatsink is too hot to touch after 2 seconds of having my fingers on it, is that O.K.?  It also raised my average FPS from 41 to 52 according to the 3D view on the side.

Edit: The heatsink isn't so hot anymore at all.  Just warm.

the 9600 run pretty hot. i suggest you get some ram-heatsinks and stick them on the ram. And unless you bump the voltages it shouldnt really get much warmer (maybe just a couple of °C)

The card makers ship cards with the settings so that there is a safety margin for artifacts. Otherwise they would get returns from people. These cards are mass produced so each card will have its own limit depending on the card and the cooling inside case. I overclocked my card and the cooling fan went from occasionally going to high to continuously running on high. So I removed the second dvd drive and added a drive bay cooler to move more air through the case. Now I'm back to the fan occasionally going to high. Time to up the ante!

The X800GTO runs really hot stock. I would get a Zalman Vf700, or a Zalman Vf900 cooler for it. Get some AS5 thermal paste too.

"however during that test my screen becomes all, wierd,  green/blue/red lines through it."

That's called artifacting. In your case, that means the card is too hot. Running the card hot will damage it's lifespan.

The X800 GTO2 is a good overclocker (X850XT PE once you unlock the extra pipes). But the later X800GTS2s are not the X850XT PE core.
