well I have started to notice little artifacts in my games recently.  I see little dots all over the screen, or black boxes.  I have seen these in BF2 and in the demo for Prey.  It is the worst in Prey... just look at this screenshot, I think you will understand.

Does that look like my video card is dead to you guys?  Or could it be something else?  The card is a Radeon 9800 pro and I have had it for about a year.  I'm pretty sure that SOMETHING is wrong with it....

Slap a couple of these on there and see if it cools off.  Feel the video card to see if heat's the problem first.

yeah I have an ATI, and it is not overclocked.  But you guys would agree that the problem is in the video card right?  I don't want to go buy a new card and still have this problem.  I was having this problem yesterday before I updated to new drivers, should I try rolling back a ways?  I will try to see if its an overheating problem.

He only had it for one year, plus it's a 9800.  The only way it could die is if it's been pushed a little too hard.

ok, well does anyone have a suggestion for a good AGP card I could get... it would need at least 12 pipes and would need to be 256-bit, and 256 MB.  I am considering this one here

does anyone have a nvidia suggestion?  I'm fine with ATI or Nvidia.

its a heat prob, either a badly seated gpu fan or more likely the fans either too dirty or just worn out causing
temp to rise creating the artifacts.
i had a badly seated fan on my bfg 6600gt whic i fixed,& a mate had same heat probs through a dodgy fan on a ati 9800pro.
artifacts seem to stand out more on games with heavy dx9 effects like nfsmw, splintercell, prey.

try turning all gfx settings down low,if the cards fucked artifacts will still be there as bad.if theres less artifacts then its just heat.take the fan off, clean it/oil it & replace with new thermal paste or new fan.
any luck be workin ok.

I have looked at those cards, but it seems that they all have 8 pipes.  But if the difference between 8 and 12 (or even 16) isn't very big then I'd go for it.

What's your price range?

preferably around 200 US dollars, as I'd like to buy some more RAM too.  I guess I'd be willing to spend up to 250.  I want to keep the prices down as I am saving up for a new rig which will have PCI-E.

ok, I just went and turned all the graphical effects all the way down, and it certainly didn't get any better.

So I guess it's not getting any better.

This looks like a good one.  512MB of GDDR2 RAM, 12 pipes, under 150$.

I think I will go with the original card I had picked out, another gig of RAM, and some cooling devices.  I think I might wait on the PCI-E until vista and DX10 are out... I dunno, I will have to think on that.

Thanks everyone for your advice, it is very much appreciated.

Yeah, you should definately wait.  The one you picked is pretty good, good luck with it.

Try re-seating the cooler and cleaning the dust out of your case.
