Ok, well I'm going to get a new system for my birthday, and I only need to pay half. I need to know a few things, I have selected three nice budget systems, I just to need to know some facts, like if AM2 is really worth it, or if 2 gigs of ram is worth it on this video card...

So here they are

NVidia system- ABIT KN8 SLI Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 SLI ATX AMD Motherboard

                      AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Venice 2000MHz HT 512KB L2 Cache Socket 939 Processor

Creative Sound Blaster Audigy2 ZS SB0350 7.1 Channels 24-bit 192KHz PCI Interface Sound Card

                      eVGA 256-P2-N553-AX Geforce 7600GT CO 256MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card

Kingston ValueRAM 1GB (2 x 512MB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Unbuffered DDR 400 (PC 3200) Dual Channel Kit System Memory + My other gig of ram

Total Cost = $519.65/2*

ATI system-    ABIT AT8 32X Socket 939 ATI CrossFire Radeon XPRESS 3200 ATX AMD Motherboard

                     AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Venice 2000MHz HT 512KB L2 Cache Socket 939 Processor

Creative Sound Blaster Audigy2 ZS SB0350 7.1 Channels 24-bit 192KHz PCI Interface Sound Card

                     SAPPHIRE 100154 Radeon X1800XT 256MB 256-bit GDDR3 VIVO PCI Express x16 Video Card

                     MASSCOOL PS-PSU460 ATX12V/ EPS12V 460W Power Supply 90 - 264V UL, TUV, SIMKO, CB.

Total Cost = $677.96/2*

AM2 system-  ABIT KN9 SLI Socket AM2 NVIDIA nForce 570 SLI MCP ATX AMD Motherboard

                     AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Orleans 2000MHz HT 512KB L2 Cache Socket AM2 Processor

                     G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM Unbuffered DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit System Memory

                     eVGA 256-P2-N553-AX Geforce 7600GT CO 256MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card

Creative Sound Blaster Audigy2 ZS SB0350 7.1 Channels 24-bit 192KHz PCI Interface Sound Card

Total Cost = $653.09/2*

Now, I want to know if AM2 is really worth it at all, cause I don't want to spend too much money on something that really be much of a difference from socket 939's. Also, you see that I don't include the ram on the ATI system, because I wanted to know if I get the NVidia system, does the extra ram (two gigs in total) help it compete against the x1800xt (one gig of ram)? I'm not changing the processors because I can just overclock also. I also need a sound card, but I already have a PSU, I just need to get a new one if I get the x1800xt, since it requires more power. You may now respond.

*shipping included, but I don't know if there's tax...

AMD and Nvidia is a good pair. Intel and ATI aren't as good.
Thats just my opinion.

i think for the third opttion that the ram with single core procs is only certified to run At 667 speed and not 800

and you can chop out the sound card if the motherboard has integrated. It is good enough if you are on a budget.
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

I second that.
I have amd64 dual core 4400+ sli gtx 7800 X 2 + 2 gigs ram and raptor drive.
I always have crack at jets/tanks or commander because my machines so fast.

Dual core cpu's have some issues but my overall advice is; spend your full budget amount on just the board and processor, save another $600-700 up and buy the rest. You'll never regret the wait. SLI rules!

AMD/Nvidia is the way to go. I have a socket 939 and love it.

You have to learn the rules of the game and then you have to play better than anyone else.

My preferred combo is AMD (CPU), ASUS (mb), BFG (video) and Corsair/OCZ (memory).

Whatever choice you make, be sure you pick up 2x1GB memory modules. If you search, you'll find many examples of excellent build choices. As for the AM2, I am always wary of rushing headlong into any new technology. I'd give it several more months to work out any bugs. Anyone who remembers the bugginess of the early incarnations of PCI-e will know what I'm talking about. Keep your eyes peeled for reviews AND customer reports.

dot buy it now..the preliminary benchmarks for Intel Core II (aka conroe) processors are fucking amazing. i know AMD fans who have had AMDs for 10 years saying that conroe looks good...now thats saying something...if you wait 1-2 months, you will see the conroe chips come on the market, the price range 300-1000 (freind of mine works for intel; 1000 is the 3.8EE). if youre not gung-ho for a conroe system, wait another month, the prices on exisitng dual core procs, Intel & AMD are expected to fall big time near the launch of conroe, some say 50 - 70%...and i have an intel/ATi system, admittedly its not crossfire, but its stable and it runs bf2 on high with capped fps (100).

Well, I guess most of you said to wait, so I will, and hopefully get a dual core system with amd, and I'm not sure yet, but I might go with NVidia, but I'm getting anxious. Thanks for your advice guys.

No one should ever have to spend $600 for a motherboard and CPU!
My little $250 CPU can rape anything within 4 times it's price range.  My last one ran at 2.9Ghz and only cost me $160.  Jello, if you want speed buy an opteron.  Go with a 146 if you're looking single core, 165 if you want to go dual core.  Put a decent HSF on it and it will OC beyond all your friends new $2500 to $3000 alienware computers.
Do some reading:
extremeoverclocking.com
to find yourself some deals:
www.fatwallet.com (look for monarch to get good deals on opterons)
Here's a good starting point:
http://secure.newegg.com/NewVersion/wis … er=3443584
feel free to swap around or shop around, but the core should be an opty and you should get DDR500 ram.
