germany: pasta & pizza certainly take the lead in what people eat normally. "traditional food" like the famous sauerkraut is pretty much dead, exept for old people or some old-school cooking for international guests, especially americans. they want it. lol.

hey PBAsydney i saw in a documentary somewhere you actually bury fish in the ground, swaddled in some cloth, and get it out months later for a nice mouldy fish dish. altough that was done way back then so you wouldn´t starve in the winter some people supposedly still do it for traditions sake, is that true at all?

Finland: Home made beer, potatoes and all what you can do from potatoes, oatmeal porridge, peasoup, sausage, "black sausage" and many more.

And I have to say this one what we eat on Easter, because it makes everyone thinking how wierd Finnish guys really are. It's called Mämmi.
That sausage is REALLY good, peasoup is ated in army once a week and i love it, black sausage is only for people in Tampere, mämmi it is really good when you mix it with some sugar and cream, then we have different kinds of beer, I think Karhu(made in Pori) is best and Koskenkorva ''Kossu'' an alcohol drink with about 45% alcohol.

Well Sauerkraut is also a national dish of Estonia (tho made differently then in Germany) and people do eat it too, mostly on holidays (i like the stuff also when its made right and upgraded with bacon - which is not traditional)

Another traditional food is blutwurst (another German food you say - well could be , during the crusades Germans came to live on our beloved soil, so i don't know, also could be there's no connection between thous two national dishes)

i thought we were the only ones with an affliction for teh sauerkraut. we upgrade it with smoked mettwurst, don´t know if you know the type, couldn´t find a translation.

i don´t think blutwurst is german, i hope it´s not, i find it really disgusting.

BTW here we eat a kind of raw minced meat,  you eat it on rolls with fresh oninon rings, it´s called mett. visiting americans found it really revolting and claimed no one else would eat it. anyone knows it?

I would have to agree with the barbeque post...not GRILLED food, but barbeque. There's a distinct difference, and even my fellow Americans get it wrong (like my wife).

But I gotta say that my favorite food thus far is German, without a doubt.

Iceland here and our national meal is: Scorched sheep heads, pickled ram's testicles, scorched sheep's head jam, blood pudding and dried fish.

We always force tourists to eat it, it's actually really good once you get used to it.
YGBSM! You people actually eat that?!

USA: Pizza, bratwurst, beer, gyro, etc...why do you think they call it a Melting Pot?

never heard of that... but its pretty much mince meat w/ some stew and some veggies inside a pie, not like a large apple pie but a medium sized 4 inch pie, good stuff as well
thats exactly whats in a pot pie.....vegies, meat, gravy all in a buttery flaky crust
Its handheld size usually consumed at sporting events(u guys have hotdogs).

They recently lowered the restriction on the % of meat to put in it, its usually beef, never really known any vegies to be put in a mass manufactured pie. However a "homemade style" can have whatever you want.

The most popular brand is "Four 'n' Twenty" they have been known to be only like 10% meat....mmmm Camel Scrapings

@Pubic

Yes they sell Kangaroo pies, there is a specialist pie store near me that also sells;

Venison
Possum
Goat
Duck
Camel
Crocodile, Pies

i guess the nation dish of sweden would be those nasty rotten fishes, "surströmming" havent got the slightest clue what they are called in english.

but its some sort of fish that u let go bad and then u bring it down with some alcohol.

yearr....

As a side note, the US kitchen, thinking of bbq etc, steaks is the most delicious sheit in the world. keep up the good work yanks!

[edit]

heh...found a site in english about it, here is what it said, gotta laugh at the silly swedes

"Surströmming (sour herring) is a Swedish delicacy consisting of fermented Baltic herring. Surströmming is sold in cans, which when opened release a strong, foul smell. It is for this particular smell, which is similar to fish gone bad or garbage left out in the sun for a couple of days, that surströmming is infamous in popular culture, and it is often held that people who try surströmming can be confident that they will never forget it. Because of the smell, the dish is often eaten outdoors"
