Notice how when PRC got a seat on the UN, ROC lost one.  Doesn't that strike you as awfully coincidental?

we never lost our seat, chiang kai shek bailed out of UN coz china got a seat, and now ppl are w/ china coz its a larger economical powerhouse than taiwan, and every nation wants to be allies w/ the big player

Diversity is the reason man - have you seen "Crash" movie -, and the so called "freedom"!! - there is no limits,
"I want this and I want it now no matter how!!!" is the concept.
the numbers in one years are 6 times higher than USA's dead soldgers in "the War on Terror" since it is started!!!!!

I think Mr. Bush is fighting the wrong war. This is real Irony !!!!
Yes I have seen Crash and yes I was implying that perhaps diversity was a cause but not neccessarily the only one.

The fact that they call themselves Communist doesn't mean they are.  Same goes for USSR.  Regardless, if we're going to keep going with this we ought start a new thread.

I don't see why they would call themselves comunists when they aren't...

Communism is an economice theory you twit.

Because it made people happy?  Because they originally intended to but didn't?  Because they used to be (according to some) and now aren't?  How the fuck should I know.  Iraq called itself a Democratic Republic under Saddam, IIRC, but it wasn't.

That's pretty obvious. They want to stay in power. Best way to stay in power is by cutting the throats of any dissent that may pop up.

It works beautifully. Chinese govt. has been in power for 50 years and is still going. USSR managed to put in 70 years before it folded. Castro still seems to be in power after goodness knows how long. There's absolutely no chance Kim Jong Il will get debunked (unless someone shoots him. In which case you'll have the same thing with another ego-leader).

Oh, well if wikipedia says it it must be true, despite the fact that neither the USSR nor the PRC have stuck to Communist principles when it didn't suit them.

Re Castro:  Yeah, well, he may not be the best leader, but he was better than Batista.

Well, Tito was better. He was the only person to have any measure of success in calming Yugoslavia down.

so what ? Even so-called democratic countries tend to forget their democratic principles once in a while when it suits their interests ( see gitmo, wiretapping, CIA prisoner transports, etc ).

they remain democracies.

and although china has strong capitalist tendencies as far as their economy is concerned, they remain a communist state. communism is more of a political ideology, not necessarily a form of state economy.

these days, the distinctions are not that easy any more.

- form of government
- political ideology
- economic system

all tend to get mixed up theese days...

but we are straying off topic again...

But these are all done by elected governments

Not it isn't.  Totalitarianism is a political ideology which most (all?) self-proclaimed Communist states have ascribed to.  Few (none that I'm aware of) have actually been Communist states.

It's not the form of government that makes the difference, it is the people who govern / rule you.

It may have been established that democracy has the biggest potential to lead to a open and free society, but it certainly ain't a guarantee.

Hitler was elected, and the current President of Iran also came to power through a democratic election. Yet, both are not really poster-boys for democratic leaders, are they ?

The definition of a democract is a nation which elects it's government (originally a nation which put all things to a vote, but the Athenians learned the folly of that).  A country can be as kind or as nasty as it likes, fact is if it has an elected government it is a democracy.  Hitler was originally a democratic leader, before he outlawed all parties except the Nazi party, and then abolished democracy all together.

This Democratic nation business has been blurred IMO. When a government is elected, its duty is do do what the people want them to do. Some nations have massive Spin departments (a relatively new phenomenon) who's sole job is to change the publics opinion to what the government want to do. Infact they aren't then doing what the people want, they are doing what THEY want. This isn't true democracy.
From listening to alot of the second hand opinions I hear on these boards these spin departments are doing a dam good job and justifies the millions rerouted from health care and education to fund them.

Provided the government is elected, it's a Democracy, no matter how mean they are.  Same as no matter how nice a Totalitarian government is, it's still Totalitarian.
