I have 3 gigs of ram a 2.4 gig P4 and a 6800GT 256 mb

when fraps is recording my FPS drops from around 50 to 15, it's pretty brutal. When fraps is just running in the background not recording it doesn't affect gameplay for me.

what settings do you all run?

right now im at 1024x768 and medium most stuff (except distance i think)

would it help to maybe lower my settings before i play if i plan on recording?

FRAPS destroys my frames, how the hell do people use it and now have their frames die?

Average frame rates : 30

Average frame rates when fraps is on : 12

I have no idea how people can use this for videos...

I've been wondering this as well. I can run on a full 32 man server between 40-70 FPS, but when I start Fraps I drop to 10-15. Any of the resident skill video makers have some tips? I mean, other than spending $4000 on a new system? :p

If you register it, the process of adding the "FRAPS.COM" word at the top of each frame takes out a bit of lag... I'd say about 20%

It still slows things down a LOT, but not as much.

Also it's best to play at a low framerate and tell it to record at that resolution... because halfing the video res uses up a lot of CPU.

Haha.. That's shit.  BF2 uses a lot of resources, and it's likely FRAPS is fighting for RAM in your situation.

At any given time on my 2GB system BF2 is using between 950MB and 1.3GB.  FRAPS halves my framerate in most cases.

You guys are missing the major problem with fraps.  Its rapes your hard drive.

I record with fraps at a steady 40-60 fps in game dependign on the map and how crazy the fight is.

  I have an AMD64 3500,  X800XL pci-e,  and 2 gigs of ram.

The secret,  is recording your files to a secondary hard drive.  I have a 120 gig sata as my main, but record to my second 40 gig ata.  Makes a diffrence.  Never record to the hard drive that is doing all the work in the first place.

Record at 800x600,  half screen,  graphics on med,  sound off and to a second hard drive and if oyu have specs any where like mine you should get 40-60 fps while filming.

And make sure you have the latest version of fraps.  All the other ones sucked until the last one,  then I could actually farm noobs without getting owned by .2 FPS.

Rig:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+
nVIDIA GeForce 7800gt
2 gigs RAM
All settings maxed out @ 1600x900 resolution

I have FRAPS set to record at 30fps, full-size and with sound. My FPS drop to 30 because of the recording but no noticable effect. I also record to a partion on my main HD. I'm sure if I record at higher FPS I still won't notice a difference.
