Hey guys, I've been looking around on the net for an explanation of what kind of operating temperatures should be expected of a P4 3GHZ (530J), but I can 't seem to find anything very reliable, so thought I'd ask here.

The impression that I'm getting is that its should be exprected to run at 40c-55c under load - and I want to confirm this because mine is idling at anywhere between 52c-68c, and tends to hit up to 80c if I check the temp after doing something intensive (ambient case and mobo temps are what they should be, not getting higher that 38c, usually sitting at 35c).

Using the mobo's temperature and voltage monitor, I see that it's threshold is  set as 90c, and given that result of 80c after an intensive usage, I am presuming that it hits 90c, the thermal throlling is kicking in, and I get bad choking on my programs (programs that were not affected with choking and stuttering previously, which is what tipped me off that something was wrong).

However, coming back to those unreliable net searches, I have read that the socket 775 range of intel chips are actually built to be able to handle operating temperatures that can hit up to 115c and still function well - which just made me think 'wtf? I think I better see what the guys think...'

anyone have any thoughts?

Prescott chips are VERY hot... you need a good aftermarket cooler to keep its temp low, i got the same cpu as u do, added a tuniq tower 120 and when not overclocked, my cpu on full load doesnt hit over 50c. are u using stock cooler? coz if u its really bad to use on a p4...

The real threshold for a Prescott is pretty high yes. But you really do kill the life of a chip when you run it at 80C.
I would clean out all the dust from the case, reapply thermal paste (if you have a thermal pad, get rid of it). And if you still have temp problems, I would then invest in a new cooler.

What kind of (and direction) fans do you have in your case?

BTW pentiums have auto-shutdown so they wont melt

AS has been said before, it is kinda hot and I'd try to cool it down some, but it is definitely workable for an Intel.

AMD FTW!

not until july 23rd... conroe is gonna kick its ass... midrange conroe on par w/ fx62

True dat, true dat, but even now you can't get a good mid-range processor cheap without going AMD.

thats now, but a month... intel will pwn. but for now amd pwns a lot... but the 805D is the best cheap cpu out there, u can overclock it real easily

thanks heaps for the responses guys - very much appreciated. I'm surprised to hear that that temperature, although definitely not desirable, might be workable, as it doesn't appear to be the likely cause of my problems then...

to give you an idea of just how bad my performance is - I put a friend's new 7900GT in my box to see what kind of difference that would make, and the fps increase from my 6600 was totally negligible = I still had to run BF2 in 'Low', and fps dropped to 12-3, using the current drivers...  D'oh! Definitely a problem here...

in terms of case cooling, I actually have a crappy generic case, and so have (more often than not) left the side panel off to get the best airflow. It doesn't have any case fans, and the difference in CPU fan rpm is like 500 between have the case open or closed. I know that is totally n00b, but every time I could afford a decent case, I went and bought something else instead, like more ram and a decent power supply.

Power supply is an antec Neo HE 550w - this was on sale so I got it for future additions like a new graphics card, etc.  So I know its not a power issue. Also, cables are not impeding airflow as you only plug in the ones you need, and I have them tucked out of the way in an empty drive bay.

Although, here's the thing that made me think I may have damaged the CPU somewhere along the way, or maybe the heat sink/paste is not on correctly. A few months ago my stock Intel cooler was really freaking loud for some reason. I was a bit worried about this so I bought some thermal paste from the shop and took the heat sink off, got rid of the stock thermal pad, and applied the paste, and got it going again. IT was MUCH quieter after this, and ran better, so I assumed that it was all good. So - I just assumed that the heat sink had not been put on correctly, and it was running really hot for all that time.

But its only now with the awful performance I've been getting that I have checked the temp and started looking into this.

Yes, I was a total dork and applied the thermal past all over the CPU - so maybe that's it? Air bubbles have formed in that time and are now causing these problems? And is the thermal throttling on the Intel chips something that might correspond with that abysmal graphics performance described above?

oh, and btw, do you guys know if the conroe chips going to be 775's, or will there be a new socket?

yes conroe is gonna be on lga 775, but sadly u need a new mobo for the new VRM requirement. if u want u can get a conroe working mobo now, an asus P5WDG2-WS. even on the asus site says that doesnt support conroe, well it does. i have this board and the asus tech support sent me their latest bios for conroe support. but one question: did u connect the pci-e cable to the 7900gt?

yep, pci-e cable was connected...   that's why i thought it might be the cpu choking the hell out of everything, because otherwise the card runs fine. also, it usually starts reasonably high and then drops back steadily until its unplayable....

mobo is an asus P5ND2

what drivers u have? 82.12? get 87.25, they are much much better drivers even though they are beta's

i'm on 84.21. I'll try the beta's, but I was also thinking that I should try a fresh format just to see if that helps. What do you think? Worth doing a format?
