The cliffhanger end is vital. Even tho i know that the friendly people at valve are a bunch of greedy capitalists im still gonna buy each episode and play it. I refuse to read about the story. It's like missing an episode of Lost.
+1 for being so right.

you call 3 hours of play then your finished quality?!

When I was a small boy with my sega master system a cartridge came out with a lithum battery {ground breaking at the time) for all the info it would have to save. The game was Phantasy Star, it cost me $80 & took me over a year to end with constant playing, that is quality.

They are trying to turn games into short little movies, that will not do for me but with all the a.d.d kids of today its perfect.
phantasy star IV???

Asbad, i've played Hitman too. But you can't compare those two games. E1 is an expansion, and i guess you go buy both games. BTW hitman sucks

HLe1 is great!!  I beat it last night and it rocked me pretty hard.  One chapter is played entirely in the dark and gets a bit frustrating and the part where you have to fight the Ant Lion King and all his little friends had me yelling at the screen in udder dismay but other than that it was absoultly fantastic.  The beginning "cut scene with no cut scene" was cool and the ending was pretty damned awesome.  Too bad they leave it wide open and full of unanswered questions, but then again HLe2 is coming soon.

My mini-review:

I just got done playing it through for the second time.  The first time normal difficulty and it took me about 3-3.5 hours and it was definitely worth the $18 I payed for.  I played though it a second time to listen to all of the commentary from the developers.  You can enable commentary in the options and audio tab (or when you start  a new game).  I really like the idea of putting DVD-like extras like this into games!  I highly recommend you try it out at least.  They bring up a lot of ideas that you would never have thought of otherwise, tell you exactly why they made the maps the way they were and past ideas they had, and also how the game works in some places.

Positives:  I gotta say that the graphics on this episode are still amazing!  I'm lovin the HDR.  I cant believe that my ATI X850 XT PE can run the full HDR + 4x AA and 8x AF!  And they say only the X1k series are made to do this?!  There's some very well made action sequences and battles.  Esp. at the very end (spoiler..) against the strider and watching the Citidel core explode.  I aslo like the dark chapter where you're underground in pitch darkness fighting off hordes of zombies and "Zombines," haha.  But the layout of all the maps were well-made and thought out.  My favorite area was the Citidel though, I could stare at the Core forever.. it's sooo purdy.. haha.  And try launching the pulse balls into it, it pulses

Negatives:  Some of the things I didn't care about are that there's actually very little story progression at all.  Which I really dont mind because I know Ep. 2 & 3 will have much more, but I'm dying with anticipation here, hah.  The gameplay wasn't quite as varied as it was in HL 2 with the environments and vehicals (there's absolutely NO vehicals).  I guess I cant really complain about that though since this is just an "episode" that's supposed to last 3-4 hours.  I have no idea how they're gonna be able to end this game.. but I do know that it's gonna be totally unpredicable up until the very end and it's gonna be one hell of a climax given how all the other games have ended.

I give it a 9/10 still.

Here's some questions you'll be left with at the end (besides the same ones at the end of HL 2):

1.  What happened to Dr. Breen?
2.  What was that pod thing that affects your mind/vision when Dr. Breen left?
3.  What info was on that "packet" that Alex downloaded?
4.  What the hell happened to the G-Man at the beggining?  He sounded pissed...
5.  Where'd Dr. Mossman go?
6.  Did Dog survive the Citidel core melt-down (gasp!)?

That's all I can think of for now and I hope Episode 2 will answer at least half of those along with the still unanswered questions of HL 2.

1. Didn't he get incinerated at the end of HL2?  Pretty sure he did because he yelled "NOOOO!!" and then shit blew up and time stopped.  The big fireball to the right was Dr. Breen.  Also, the rhetoric Alex used in several points in HLe1, suggests that he is in fact.....dead.

2. Don't know, but whatever it was it got fried in the core explosion at the end.

3. Good question.  Can't wait for HLe2.

4. (Personal Opinion) The Vortigons confronted G-Man and he said "We'll see about that" and then you wake up.  I think they told him what the Combine were doing by deliberately making the core meltdown and he didn't want that to happen.  Maybe he wanted the info on the packet or maybe he didn't want the key players to die in the city....I don't know.

5. 10 to 1 she's dead.

6. Of course.  He's to cute to be blown up.

1 & 2:  Didn't you see Dr. Breen on the monitor Alyx was looking at in the Citidel right before you see that pod thing get launched?  He was like, "Hurry up!  He's right behind me" because Freeman was back in the Citidel and Breen didn't want to be found by him.  I think Breen was in that Pod.  It didn't get blown up with the Citidel either because you saw it heading for the top of the Citidel where it would escape.  Plus at the end of Ep.1 you see ALL of the pods escaping and flying away right before the Citidel explosion.

4:  My opinion:  I think the G-Man was pissed because the Vortigaunts saved Alex and Gordon from the explosion at the end of HL2.  Then mabye they held him captive or something in that other dimension it looked  like because I didn't see him in his eerie "I'm watching you" spots as you do in HL and HL2.

5:  I'm pretty sure she's not dead.  When you see her on the monitor in the Citidel it looks like she's in a completely different part of the world because you see that new enemy that wasn't in Ep.1 but in the Ep.2 trailor (I think).  Wasn't she in the Ep.2 trailor too?

That was an old tape, taken in HL2 right after he blew up his office

Just beat it, took like 2.5-3hours maybe. What a piece of shit.

They didn't answer anything, it was just too freaking short. Pointless waste of time. No new guns, 1 new enemy, ZOMBINES!!!11 Cliffhangar ending of course, stay tuned to next episode which comes out when, 2 years from now?

I hate cliffhangar endings in games, it totally breaks the experience. It took them 2 years to make that? Heh.

It's a super ripoff as well. In a normal game release that cost 50bucks you get multiplayer content as well as a much longer single player campaign that adds loads of replay time.

In this you pay 20bucks for 3hours of gameplay and no mp stuff. Thats 8 bucks an hour.

My current CPH (cent per hour) for Battlefield 2 is:

Cost ($50 base): 7.5318 cph

Compare 7.5 cents per hour to 8 bucks an hour. There goes my faith in Valve.

Garbage
How can you say this? Don't you ever look around and admire the graphics, there was a lot of hard work put into this game. The physics engine, textures, storyline, gameplay, voice-overs, commentary... there was a lot of time put into this game for your 4-6 hours of enjoyment. And only $20, just don't buy lottery tickets for a day.
