Due to various reasons I am going to need a CD player for work.
I don't see why I should wear out my irreplaceable ipod drowning out morons, or my phone really.
Was thinking about a record player but it would be over the top and fuckwits would jog my desk.

What setup will I need?

This looks nice,
https://addictedtoaudio.com.au/products … -cd-player

What amp or whatever would I need to go with it? I would like to have some tone controls.
Do I need a DAC? Pre-Amp? Amp?

Or anything from here. I have not heard of FiiO
https://addictedtoaudio.com.au/collections/cd-players

It will be used to drive my Bose over-ear wired headphones and mostly for Nickelback and Lady Gaga.

As far as I know Australian phones don't have that, it would be un-Australian.

Or this?
I can just have the unit on my desk, keep the speakers for later, or buy the unit standalone

really don’t like denon as a brand, but that’s specifically because they make some of the ugliest and most ungainly DJ gear ever seen.

why do you need a hifi tuner and all in one box? presumably that means you’ll be looking to buy passive hi-fi speakers. those require a fair amount of space. if you’re just looking for small bookshelf speakers or desktop monitors, you don’t need amplifiers or tuners or whatever.

i don’t know a lot about that particular niche. i do know there’s loads of multimedia home centre type devices now that allow you to route your television and games consoles and pc and phone and everything else through a sort of all-purpose ‘streamer’. i guess that could make sense if you just want a device to tie all of your disparate things together. but unnecessarily complicated if you’re just going to be sat in one room listening in front of a PC with the occasional CD.

sorry just saw this. do you specifically listen on CDs? lots of new players are being made for gen-Z who are going gaga for retro. think sony walkman in 2026. most of those mobile players will have half-decent DACs in them already that can power 80% of headphones.

there are standalone media players if you’re firmly into the mp3 or streaming world. think an iPod but upgraded to 2026 storage and DAC quality. they also have lots of in-built EQ options if you want to adjust the sound to your taste.

you get into pre-amps and standalone desktop DACs, but that implies you have either a CD player or a laptop with music on it. and it’s overkill unless your headphones/earphones/speakers are at a certain level. good DACs run the gamut from a couple hundred dollars to a couple thousand, and you should be investing 3-4x that on the actual speakers or earphones tbh. the digital side of music conversion is pretty much a solved engineering problem nowadays tbh, having a standalone femtosecond clock with entire hadal zones of clear black signal floor will only make a 10% difference max over an iphone dongle you can get for 20 bucks.

for simplicity, you really can’t beat a good pair of IEMs and a good clear DAC. plenty of small bookshelf speakers will sound great without need for expensive amplifiers - active-powered speakers are every bit as good as passive ones nowadays, particularly in the sub-$1k bracket.

again, the streamer and hifi centre things are great if you’re playing regularly from multiple sources. if you wanted to combine CDs with web streaming in one device, it could do the trick. i’d again prioritise the speakers or earphones though, personally. that would bring a lot more joy.

you can’t go wrong looking second-hand for CD decks. the technology hasn’t really changed since the 1980s.

OK, hear me out.

Mostly I listen to my ipod at work, radio and CDs in the car, a bit tired of burning up my ipod and don't want to burn up my phone either.
An ipod doesn't have the oomph to drive over-ear headphones fully, a hifi amp is a different experience - do I want that at work though?
Plus I think I should spend a bit of money here and there for a few reasons.

A mid size discman would probably do the job but I've not really found anything.

I was looking at something like the Cambridge Audio CD player plus some combined DAC/Amp which I could potentially plug the ipod into also - I want at least treble and bass control, again not seen anything obvious.

The Denon thing actually seems to meet all the requirements, plus it has radio for when I'm really bored, I can get the box standalone or store the speakers and it can become my shed stereo when I retire.

I did want something shiny on my desk to be a conversation piece "ooh Dilbert whats that?" "Well let me tell you..."
I had thought about a turntable and amp but that seems OTT.

OK, I'd prefer a graphic equaliser to treble and bass, what happened to them?

you can still get them. i have a highly customisable parametric EQ on my soundcard with a pretty graphic equaliser. does cost $2500 though.

i'm sure there are many others at different price points. if you're really concerned about EQ'ing in particular, a change to a media player or software with a built-in EQ on your laptop will achieve the exact same thing for free. the benefit of having a hardware version is that (a) you can test and A/B better with many headphones, and (B) set it and forget it.

you're right that the standard dongle from an ipod/iphone won't power over ear headphones. a standalone media player would though, which come with much better outputs. or there's a range of small dongle DACs that will get you nearer to it. nothing beats a desktop headphone amplifier, of course, but that necessarily ties you to your ... desktop.

astell&kern do some really nice bits of kit for standalone digital media players. i'd guess the name is probably an intentional echo of bang&olufsen (the prices too):

https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/71L9LLGVNFL._AC_UF1000,1000_QL80_.jpg

there's loads of affordable DAC dongles to plug into your iphone/ipod or laptop via USB and upgrade the sound a bit. i use an english company called iFi but there's frankly cheaper and just as good ones on the market from chi-fi manufacturers.

https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcR9h_ERalZvHOALixJEGKZxuhBsvugwxwUw_MLkbO16Q09rQqJMgsWj-w9M&s=10

w/r/t getting a full desktop set-up that covers streamer, DAC, headphone amp, etc. -- yep, the denon will definitely take care of that. don't cambridge audio themselves have a streamer unit too? they are all the rage nowadays for reasons you well elucidate. here are some good brand names from chi-fi that do very well specced stuff for cheaper than cambridge audio: FiiO, Topping, Qudelix.

a lot of the nicer streamer units will basically function as home servers/NAS devices for you, too, helping to store and transcode different media formats to a uniform output. i feel your pain about switching from a physical (CD or vinyl)-based library to my digital library. i was into ripping vinyl records through a top AD/DA converter for a while but it takes a whole afternoon to get a few albums into your computer that way. apart from fetishising extra-expensive cartridges and stylii, may as well just additionally buy the bloody digital files tbh.

That Astell thing looks nice.
Or this seems like it would work with the CD player.
https://www.cambridgeaudio.com/row/en/p … magic-200m
Can't tell if it has tone control, helpfully the link for the manual links right back to the product page, apparently it has three 'filters'

Overall my use cases are:

At work, can be a couple of hours a day, most of the stuff I have on my ipod I have the CD for.

In the car - CDs and radio. I can plug in the ipod.
Assuming I have to buy a new car will have to go over to radio plus phone I guess. I think most systems these days allow connection of a standalone CD player by USB but its hit and miss and seems like a lot of trouble.

At home - mostly in the shed/workshop - and mostly youtube videos ripped a long time ago.

Travelling - fairly rare these days, I'm done with work travel and don't care if I get fired, ipod is good enough.

Overall the mini-hifi makes the most sense at this point, and probably plenty good enough for me.
Maybe some other device like the Astell thing to upload all my CDs again, I dunno.

2 new ones and maybe a third on the way.

It is a subdivision of Seiko. I like automatic watches because you never have to worry about a battery.

I can't afford the Cartier Santos so I have to go with the Casio.

About $500 total between the two watches. Very much in my economic class.
https://helpfulprofessor.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/lower-middle-class-1024x724.jpg
I want to do one step up in range. About $2000.

Choosing between the Tissot PRX Chronograph Automatic.

Pro: A local jewelry store has it in stock and has partnership with Tissot. They said they could probably do 10 to 15% off MSRP.

$2150
https://www.tissotwatches.com/dw/image/v2/BKKD_PRD/on/demandware.static/-/Sites-Tissot-Catalogue/default/dwde1ef6ce/product-pictures/3b60a002-2031-4a8b-802e-a63a3a936a51_T137-427-11-011-01_shadow.png?sm=fit&sw=1680&sh=1680,gravity=center
Pro: the jewelry shop can size it for me and remove the links and service it. I know how it looks on my little man wrist.
https://www.themodestman.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/How-to-measure-wrist-size.jpg
Con: the inner blue dials. The only white face one with black inner dials have these pink gold accents 😢

The other realistic one I could get is the Hamilton Jazzmaster Chronograph Automatic.
https://www.timescapeusa.com/cdn/shop/files/HAMILTON-JazzmasterPerformerChronoAutoH36606110.jpg?v=1733517713&width=990
$2500 MSRP
Pro: I love the look of it. Everyone I asked which looks better have said the Hamilton. It also has the white and black look I want.

Cons: looks bigger on my small wrist. I would have to take it to a third party to get it sized or look for an authorized reseller who can do it on premise.

I might need to postpone this though since I need to buy my girlfriend a better home security system because diversity is kicking her door.

the wealthy can get by with a singular mechanical watch as an anachronistic, optional accessory. men's fashion is forgiving that way. it doesn't have to match your outfit. it doesn't have to be four figures. that can be a look to go for.

aren't people in or running for important offices mostly stressing about lapel pins? if you want to run for office, don't forget to put an american flag on your blazer. you don't care about america if you don't have one.

make sure to get some ribbon pins too.

Some of the super rich regularly give presentations with million dollar watches. Bill Gates and Steve Jobs were very much of a different generation.

a person could look classier with orders of magnitude cheaper accessorizing than robo-hobbit up there.

is that a tee and a blazer? that's got "showed up at a fancy event and had to take a loaner" energy. gates above is dressed better, honestly.
