i guess it's cool that his rat lived so long.

viviane sassen has some cool stuff. it blows my mind the attention a random array of inanimate objects in a photo can get, in a good way.

(obviously i don't compare), my best-received in college was of random junk on the side of the road while i was panicking on a near-late city photography project. it ended up put in the hallway by the program boss. framed. taunting me whenever i walked past it in all its inauthentic unintentionality.

i'd forgotten about it until now.

the original pokémon were just overgrown bugs, critters, small mammals, with some ‘end game’ ghosts and environmentally damaging toxic types and legendary-mythical dragons and demi-gods thrown in. really not hard to grasp if you’re at all familiar with japan first as a biome(s) and then japanese culture and folk beliefs. they’re an animist culture and nature really is full of spirits running the gamut from hyperlocal, whimsical household guardians to scary mountain demons that will fuck your shit up if you cross them. pokémon really didn’t take a leap of the imagination.

in fact it’s totally common to see schoolchildren here on bug-catching expeditions. i’d be willing to bet good money the original author(s) were just being nostalgic for that classic school kid experience. i live fairly in the centre of the biggest city on Earth and see kids regularly dressed up as scouts with big nets. the japanese have shared these islands with their supersized bugs for a very long time.

i'm sure all of this is ultra-obvious and has been written about at great and exhausting length before. but i'm just Noticing from first principles here. i ain't reading all that.
