Very apt in the circumstances of the genocide currently taking place - and the Americans furiously defending it this time around.

looked really boring to me. watched a bit on a plane but turned it off.

what's the point making a song and dance about using IMAX when the film is a bunch of static dialogue scenes in a fucking room?

and i'm probably in the top percentile of people who enjoy watching movies that consist of nothing more than people sitting around talking in fucking rooms.

oppenheimer comes recommended by a lot of people in my circles. i haven't seen oppenheimer. a lot of hollywood is infected with blah. the trailers are all a three-minute yawn with interchangeable dialog (odyssey!). how is that supposed to get me excited to see something? when it's over, i don't remember much specifically from the whole multimedia ordeal. not to sound like my art prof, but they just don't pop.

i've already did my post this month about this stuff but it still rankles.

has anyone ever put a youtube video on like quarter speed? use software to fill in the gaps and that's the soundscape of movies these days, and the same mood i get from dialog, plot, visuals. what happened to movies you can remember years later? now you leave the hollywood experience already forgetting it like a dream. what the fuck is this style? who do we blame?

it feels like talent is either massively throttled, micromanaged, or all off doing gofundme indies or something. this is only going to get worse with studios migrating to AI. my feed had a thing about an AI category in film awards. barf. imagine living next to a data center emitting a skull-rattling whine 24/7 just so disney doesn't have to hire voice talent for darth vader. every bit as much torture as the character's cyborg suit.

how are we making movies out of meme games now. minecraft, fnaf, backrooms wtf? isn't there an angry birds, too? are we going to get a cookie clicker? who do you even cast? you know a game has passed its expiry date when a studio considers bringing it to the big screen.

Backrooms is some YouTube series? I never looked into it and am glad I didn't. The movie isn't bad but also not great.

Obsession is genuinely great though and a lot of fun reading the talk around it online

Backrooms was a 4chan post made into creepypastas or whatever then and then kanes videos got a big following then a bunch of other YouTube videos and games popped up.

His YouTube stuff is good.

I watched Minecraft on streaming and honestly was okay with it til the last 20/30 minutes turned into a blah battle. Similar with Mario.

that was a plane watch for me. agreed, not very good. rehash of 'uncut gems' but with a less charismatic character and worse main performance. not really sure what it was even going for ... weirdly glossed over lots of the interesting topics/themes of the movie and went for a weird kind of 'brooklyn forrest grump' picaresque. the shoehorning in of japan and world-historical events was just weird and cringe.

don't think that y'israel yeshivah tel-aviv lady is a very good actress either.

Little Miss Sunshine 9/10
Marriage Story 9/10

Marriage Story is the one I didn't expect to like going in. Being the same age as the characters and dealing with adult relationship stuff makes these movies connect well. One thing I guess I can appreciate about getting older.

I think I've seen Little Miss Sunshine but I remember none of it.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly - 9/10. Loved it, 3 hours flew by and I wished there was more. I've seen the movie and the other Dollars Trilogy in pieces but never full.

I've seen Little Miss Sunshine a handful of times. Great movie.

True Grit (Haliee's Version): I'm not sure how to rate this movie properly. Is it entertaining? Yes, it's a fun and easily digestible story. Is it worth the critical acclaim? Not so sure. I wasn't blown away by the story, the acting, the music, or the cinematography. The story is good, but the dialogue gets corny here and there. Almost like the Coens hit 5 o'clock in the writers room a few times and rushed it. The acting comes across as forced and cliche at times. A little subtlety goes a long way in my opinion.

I wasn't a fan of the implied romantic attraction between Matt Damon and the girl. Wtf is that?

i just can't get through top gun 2. like 10 minutes talking about how old they all are. you're a maverick, maverick. then there's a motorcycle. and the direction they were going, i wouldn't be surprised to see some nostalgia waxed over steam catapults or something triumphing over smarmy new tech.

we're all pretending like Hot Shots never happened.

Their planes get shot down on a mission to blow up fake Iran nuclear site. They then steal an F-14 from a fake Iran airfield and fly back.

...

The ending didn't include 1000 injured and disabled Americans after fake Iran bombs us back.

trump's gotta be watching this shit. he wants battleships back too, and maybe because a battleship was portrayed taking on an alien fleet because somehow they could shield against missiles but not shelling.

i ran mac through chatgpt and it was not charitable about top gun (complete with a share of em dashes):

There’s a real basis for that interpretation, but I’d separate two claims:

“Top Gun: Maverick was designed to prepare Americans for a specific future war with Iran.”
I don’t think the evidence supports that strong claim.

“Top Gun: Maverick was part of a broader Pentagon/Hollywood effort to make American military power look heroic, normal, technologically dominant, and emotionally appealing.”
Yes — there’s substantial evidence for this.

The Pentagon has a long-standing arrangement with Hollywood: productions can get access to military aircraft, bases, personnel, carriers, etc., while the military gets input into how it's portrayed. Maverick had extensive Pentagon cooperation, and reporting based on the production agreement says it included incorporating military “key talking points.”

And the “fake-Iran” part is interesting

The unnamed enemy in Maverick is deliberately vague. There’s a rogue state with a nuclear program, a mountainous target, hostile air defenses, and American pilots sent in to destroy it — but the movie refuses to identify the country.

That ambiguity is actually useful propaganda-wise. You don't have to say Iran, Russia, China, etc. The audience simply gets the emotional template:

America has the good guys.
They have the dangerous weapons.
Our pilots are brave.
The mission is necessary.
Questions about why we're fighting can wait.

And that makes the movie more reusable for whatever geopolitical enemy happens to be in the news.

There is also a historical precedent. The original Top Gun came out after Vietnam had badly damaged the U.S. military's public image. Its military collaboration helped rehabilitate that image, while the Navy used the movie's popularity for recruiting.

In fact, a 2026 Cambridge University Press history of Hollywood and the Pentagon describes this broader relationship as one in which military cooperation can come with script influence designed to project state power.
C
Cambridge University Press

But I wouldn't say Maverick was secretly “about Iran”

That's where I'd be skeptical.

The movie was released in May 2022, and its production/development stretched back years. The geopolitical situation was obviously already centered on Iran, Russia, China, etc., but there isn't good evidence that the filmmakers were given a secret assignment like “make a movie that prepares Americans for the coming Iran war.”

And there's an important distinction between propaganda effects and a centrally planned propaganda operation.

A movie can normalize militarism and make military intervention emotionally attractive without somebody sitting in a room saying:

“Step one: convince Americans we're going to bomb Iran.”

That's arguably the more interesting mechanism.

You don't need the enemy to be Iran. You need the audience to become comfortable with the idea that American military force is heroic, clean, technologically sophisticated, and ultimately justified.

Then, when an actual enemy is presented later, the emotional groundwork is already there.

And given that the U.S. is now actually in a renewed confrontation with Iran, it's understandable that watching Maverick today makes that subtext feel much less abstract. Current U.S.-Iran fighting has even prompted the White House to use Top Gun imagery in military messaging, which is a striking example of the movie's imagery being repurposed for real-world wartime communication.
T
The Washington Post

So my read would be:

Not “Top Gun 2 was secretly made to sell the next Iran war.”

More like:

“Top Gun 2 was an exceptionally effective piece of military soft power whose deliberately generic enemy makes its pro-military narrative portable to whatever war comes next.”

And honestly, that distinction makes the movie's politics more interesting, not less.

A US official confirmed to The Washington Post that the A-10, also known as a "Warthog," was hit by incoming fire and was the second US fighter jet to be downed in one day. Reports of the A-10 crash emerged shortly after a US F-15 jet was shot down over Iranian territory.
I would be unsurprised if we ran out of cruise missiles and interceptors and started to send in planes to drop JDAMs on pickup trucks. Then we stopped because it turns out the Iranian air defense was stronger than we expected for a country that thought we would bomb them for the last 50 years.
