this is the part where republicans tell you you just sit on your ass all summer collecting a paycheck. like they don't sit on their asses every chance they get, anyway.

that curriculum does feel very broad, but looks good. it sounds nice to have the freedom to set it on your own. this is like a combination of several of my history classes plus some overlap with high school geography.

i think you're right that the most important part isn't so much the material as being able to think about it, or take in new information. i think about this from time to time when arguing with boomers who were educated during the cold war.

Thank you for taking the time to look at all of it.

We are 10 month employees. So I work summer school. I am only off for the month of August. My pay went down a lot this summer compared to the previous three due to budget issues. Budgets are horror shows right now. But my contract is good.

You have mentioned before how the boomers hate collaborative learning. They likely took part in it as children. We just didn't have a name for the concept yet.

crickets on pushing desks together until conservative personalities started saying it was Bad?

"the kids won't learn to think for themselves!" to an audience who suddenly thinks kids won't learn to think for themselves. need to remove the bun a moment to scrape all the excess irony off that patty.

if the priority, like they keep saying, is to produce generations that can function in a workplace setting, collaborative effort seems kind of important to me.

On the one hand kids need to learn to collaborate, that was not part of my learning.

On the other they need to actually learn, from what I can see they aren't.

i don't think any collaborative emphasis is really what's holding classrooms back. will have to consult with mac.

Technical Recruiter: the CFO would like to schedule an interview with you. Are you free on Friday between 1-3pm PST?

Me: Yes I am

Meeting invite: 7pm PST.

Who in their right mind schedules a job interview for Friday 7pm? This has to be some kind of weird flex, right?

Guess I'm not going to the George Thorogood concert tomorrow.

i read an article i won't bother linking because we've all read the same thing over and over again.

"i'm a teacher making 60 grand a year. frivolous impulse spending was hurting my financial stability. now i don't drink coffee every day (and i'm back on track!)"

avocado toast.

The Chinese girl who kept looking at me seems to have picked up with some hispanic guy and is now pregnant, or has a lot of gas.

i hate my job

I put ankle monitors on crims. yesterday I rejected a task for the first time visiting another gypsie who we just visited the day before but he had no electricity, during the visit he told us how he just wanted to get his deceased mothers jewellery back he thought we (our company or me and the other officer on the visit idk) apparently stole, then go stab his cousins to get put back in prison. tonight had to tag a gypsie tonight who was fucking trashed, made the job 4x longer than it should have been. then just got verbally abused by some crackhead with empty cans of lighter gas lying around. and I barely make more than minimum wage. I do like the fact I drive all over scotland for most of my shift and only do probably 3 hours of actual work in a 7 hour shift with a lot of autonomy, but the money isn't worth it. I've gotten an offer from another company doing field work, driving around a smaller area contacting people who are in collections but ignoring contact efforts. about £6k more a year, but I'd need to bring my own car to the job, visits would be recorded, more micromanaging, more work per day. looks like the grass is brown on both sides and I don't know if I should jump ship to potentially be as fed up but earning more.

get a social work qualification. you’ll be getting paid handsomely to deal with the daily drunks and dropouts.

I actually did consider this a few months back but from the research I put in it sounds like not a lot more money and far more involvement and effort

had a very non-academic friend who went to uni of bath to get a social work degree (incidentally a very strong university academically, but these sorts of courses are ‘outside’ the traditional application route so you don’t need A+AA at a-level or whatever to get in; he basically dropped out of a-levels back when we were doing them).

did a few years of driving around and dealing with unpleasantness as you describe for the local county council. maybe 2 years tops before he got moved up a rung to a very comfortable salary, and it has been a continual ascent since then. he was making £50-60k a long time before any of my ‘elite uni graduate scheme’ friends.

public sector work in councils or NHS or similar is one of the only gravytrains left for half-ambitious normies. probably doing better than all the graduate management consultants or civil servants who ‘did well’ at school.

financially, that is. you still have to deal with gypsies and alcoholic deadbeat dads and battered wives for your bread and butter. but isn’t that scotland anyway?

Get a teaching degree and avoid needing to drive around for work. If you can handle nonviolently "tagging a gypsy" (???),  you can handle not hitting a child.

there aren’t that many fires in scotland on account of the fact they all live in damp caves and it rains every day.

if you want to fight fires, move to the woodlands of north america. it's all part of the operation to flush out bigfoot.

I like driving around, especially if it's someone elses car and fuel. was considering hgv but the potential to run over an mpv and killing a family of 5 scares me.

also another shout. I did apply for a firefighting role on some island a while back but didn't pursue it further. I don't want to move further away from my nieces cause they're the only thing keeping me going to be frank. thanks for the ideas.

what are we thinking short term though, tough it out for guaranteed job security (I could never get fired from this job) or risk it for more money and potentially more misery

It's as if the universe is giving me some sort of a sign to GTFO this job. It's normally an alright gig with the odd horrific house/incredibly distasteful individual sprinkled in from time to time, however these past weeks have just been a concentration of utter shite. Difficult, violent, non-compliant gypsies, hoarder houses where the air is thicker than a downtown industrial Chinese city, stupid amounts of double work because our systems are archiac. I've been making stupid mistakes also, which I'm putting down to stress, quite out of the norm.

Recruiter from the other job is simultaneously telling me there's no rush to fill the role yet has been calling me asking for updates on my decision. I'd have already jumped ship if it wasn't the fact I had to supply my own work vehicle. I should put more feelers out yet I'm too stressed from my current job to dedicate the time to search more.

I've put in a request for a week off starting 8th Sept on our new HR system despite the fact I only just took 2 weeks off at the start of July to see if it'll help me decompress and give me time to figure my options better.

My current manager is really fantastic, great lady, yet I feel I can't bring any issues up with her because of how businesses are, any complaining will bring about no realistic change and then will be used against you when it suits them.

The only real good aspect of this is how utterly fucked the company is in terms of staff. Lacking members, constant people phoning in, the last hire in my area lasted a couple of months past her initial training before packing it in, I've just trained the newest recruit and he's pulling sickies. The quality of the work that I see done by others (aside from the woman who trained me - who is excellent) is abysmal. There's one guy for the Aberdeen area and he's a bawhair away from being sacked despite being on track for a firing for the entire duration I've worked here, little over a year. So yeah, I'm a valuable asset to them right now, so I could probably thrash against the walls somewhat without much consequence. If they deny my time off request (normally you need to book 4 weeks in advance) I'm just gonna give them a sick note from the docs for stress.

thanks for coming to my ted talk idk if there's anything you can do but writing this has probably helped me a little on its own.
