Are you senile? We did this about a month ago.
What is even your point? That chart is about 50:50 technology:useless stuff.

the point being that the popular refrain has been to 'do computer science' or 'do STEM' as common sense good advice.
when really it connects to no reality in any job market in the west any more.

A lot of tax breaks and subsidies that the Biden admin put into place as part of the CHIPS act either expired or were clawed back by the Trump admin for tax breaks. Then the DOGE thing happened and a lot of the Federal governments technical people got fired.
So there was a double whammy to STEM workers.

We literally did this already, pay in STEM is a lot higher and there's generally less underemployment in STEM.uziq wrote:

There are the odd standouts like comp sci, but generally no.

i don't think you grasp that an entire generation of people graduating today aren't going to find 'high-paying graduate STEM jobs'.
Well thats what happens if boomers ship all the investment and work in value-add industries overseas for short-term gain.
OTOH Comp-sci has always been a shit-show, for every graduate who gets a job at Intel there's 8192 doing IT support for a company which does non-tech stuff.

IT does seem to be one of those many thankless (or short-term thanks) jobs. the stereotypes are rooted in truth. people expect what you fix to stay fixed. when it doesn't, it's your fault. when it does, they're paying you for nothing! decisions in your sphere of influence are made over your head, wrongly, and you get to deal with it when it goes south. this is true both at tech and non-tech companies.
but this is also true for non-IT maintenance people, right down to day porters and custodians, and many other jobs besides. i think computer people are a little off-base in their singled-out martyr complex. at least in IT you can roll out some antique memes like interocitor-usage.

I'm not criticising comp-sci people, it is indeed a thankless task with unlimited downside and no to little upside, they have to stay bang up to date with infinite systems and interactions between systems, interact with users etc.

I would create an account to read this, but The Economist is pro-Israel so nah.

comp-sci people should be criticised. a good chunk of criticism even comes from the inside. it can be toxic for a number of reasons more related to its own people than the job.
this is even way before taking bigballs and pals into consideration. incel gamergate nonsense periphery of that Venn diagram. imagine wanting to be a techbro in 2025.

Every guild has its own arrogance, PCB designers are amongst the worst I meet.
Literally all the hard work has been done for them.

circuit board layout optimizers were seen as a toy when i was in college, for the reason that you were supposed to understand what it is exactly you were doing, or at least take full responsibility for the shit you threw at the wall that didn't stick. some good times, though (again, the sabotage segment was some hilarious spy shit. what on earth were we being trained for, lol).
could have done without the background buzz of chauvinism. some of the guys there were the very picture of condescending IT before they even got an associates.

Think how easy it is when you have a tool like Altium.
Creating components is hard, creating PCB technology is hard, plonking components on a PCB in virtual reality is not.
All the PCB and solder technology is off the shelf, footprints etc are done, the tracking almost does itself, press a button and it simulates itself, all the files, gerbers, PDFs, stencils are spat out on the press of one button.
"Could you move that component 1mm?"
"Oh no, I'd have to do all that work again. I'm too busy. Everyone else has to redesign everything around it"
