New computer case. Not planned but nice upgrade. Old case was tiny, this one is like 1/2 of a big tower but still much bigger. PSU cables reach, barely.
And it has a USB-C front port which my mobo does not have a connector for.

it's nice having a bit of working space.

my planned upgrade—whenever the heck that happens—involves either this atrocious 2000s dinosaur that's somehow still at or near the apex of air cooling stats, or take a heat hit for the smaller and markedly less awful-looking, earlier 2000s lian li mid tower (if that wasn't one of the things i lost from storage).

either way, the half-truth is i got it for "free." cost in new build: $0, apart from any switches that may need replaced. if guests don't buy that excuse, i can just claim freeganism.

Top loaders or die. Never going back to front loaders

top loaders are by far the most common in asia, actually. but i don't like them. they don't dry well (if at all).

really need a dryer at home for 4 months of the year here. especially for towels, bedding, etc.

i had a top loader in one of my temporary accommodations in korea and i actually ended up losing a bunch of clothes, delicates and linens especially, to mould one summer as the machine would just output ungodly amounts of heat in the wetroom it was in (common place for washing machine in small apartments) and had no drying function.

maybe there are top-loaders that have excellent heat pump dryers, i don't know, i'm not of the mind to pay $2000 for them.

I was sold at 'ULTRA FINE BUBBLE'
Is that a washer or washer-dryer? I think washer-dryer's are generally problematic.

A shared house I was in had a heat pump dryer which output the condensed water to a bucket, very neat.

Houses here generally exhaust the damp air into the room then extract it by a wall-fan, ducting it outside is nearly unheard of.
There are various duct systems which make it possible wherever its situated, mostly.

it's a washer-dryer, and yeah i know you have to spend a fair wedge to get one that doesn't suck terribly.

a $1000 bucks for 8 poxy litres of capacity should be good enough. i have more faith in japanese tech companies than korean ones anyway (do not get a samsung fridge or washer, trust me).

yeah, i had my mould damp problem during a very humid korean summer spent in a distinctly 1980s building in the military sector of seoul. one of those 'shabby chic ex-industrial neighbourhoods' where all the amenities and conveniences were very improvised. who knew that crappy buildings built to house GIs 50 years ago wouldn't appoint the best laundry rooms?

everything in my new place seems extremely well thought out in regards to sunlight, moisture, ventilation, etc. numerous small panels on the wall of every room that can be depressed/popped out with little computer case fan-style things in them to ventilate the room.

this comes up just as i swapped out my parents' decade-old front-load washer for a top-load they bought. front-load can actually last about as long as top-load with some low-effort preventative maintenance and some luck. better clean, less energy. put it on an appliance platform and you don't even have to bend over to load/unload. highly recommend. it seems they forgot a lot of the reasons they were sold front-load in the first place.

for mine, i do the monthly cleaning cycle thing and sometimes run vinegar.

leaving the lid popped open a bit helps prevent some really nasty growth in the first place, but you have to convince people not to close every appliance door they see (in a home with no reason to).

if i was replacing mine, i'd consider speedqueen. the less time i spend dinking around with appliances, the happier i am.

Apparently road-registering a half-track is problematic, I would have to register as a farmer and could only then drive it from field to field on legitimate farming business, not going to the shops for the paper.

A White Scout Car seems the next best option.

Fuel consumption at 8MPG is a lot better than 3MPG for the half track.

My front load washer just took a big ol' shit last night. Won't drain water, so I get to spend my 4th of July morning taking it apart. Fun times.

hopefully it's a just a clog somewhere for you and not a bigger problem in the pump. unfun.

some appliance places will be honest and tell you some of that stuff is more of a pain to fix than the value you get for what you'd pay.

the front loader i helped wheel out and put under a tarp shakes like it's possessed when the drum spins. so far there's been about 100 plastic shreds and two lengths of rubber over a bunch of washes. i'm pretty sure some of it has ended up in clothes or even torn through some articles. should've been taken out at the first hint. as an part-time opportunistic freegan, it's going to be interesting popping the back of that open and seeing whatever damage it's got. if it's a part i can replace for like $150, score.

I confirmed pump is working fine. There's definitely a clog somewhere. Just have to take the front off to access the drain hoses and clean them out.

I'll take it apart tomorrow. There's a risk of breaking it, but it's currently inoperable so it's not like I can fuck it up any further than it already is

is it one of those models with the easy-access filter on front? don't really have to take stuff apart to get an initial overview. very convenient. be interesting to see what (if any) gunk comes out.

the one i'm going to work on had a collection of lint and plastic shavings with the consistency of wet cat food. the container i had to catch the water was almost not enough. yech.

Engineer here:

A killer of washing machines is having the point where the outlet hose connects into the drain standpipe too high - the machine never fully empties and water stands forever, eg in the bottom of the drum and rusts out.

Some of the installation drawings are not entirely right, some machines are poorly designed and inevitably retain water in the metal drum.
The pump is at the front for access when it should be at the back to minimise the retained water, or there should be a plastic trap to retain the water which can't be dumped.

Also vinegar can corrode metal drums if there's a pinhole in the paint

And another thing, washing at low temp does not kill some bugs, funguses etc.

bleach can also damage a washing machine. infrequent vinegar diluted in a wash cycle is probably a non-issue. a person dumping half a gallon of distilled white vinegar may want to rethink.

drain pipe should be set about to code and the washing machine positioned according to unit instructions. if that's all correct, your standing water would be most likely due to a clog imo. if it's just because your machine is bad, time to swap it out unless you like crud redeposited onto your clothes.

didn't you have a post some years back about how you just run everything together on the same setting and don't see the point in separating, or the value of clothes that need separated? i think the response then too was that cold water is fine with modern laundry detergents. detergents formulated for cold will get your gym clothes nice and clean without eating a ton of power in water heating and all the various damage hot water can do to fabric. it's all come a long way from lye soap and water tubs and dingy, scratchy results.

Even if its all done to code and instructions some machines can't pump enough water out that when the pump turns off it flows back and refills the outer tub - on a top loader. You can't see the water but its there. A lot of gunge sits in it too.

Modern detergents will clean your clothes on a cold cycle but won't kill bacteria and fungi.

Yes, in my experience separating clothes achieves nothing at all.

are you fine running a load with just hot water and nothing else, then?

everyday, cold is fine. modern detergents are fine (in the correct amount, of course). you can even take care of stains this way, and there's different treatments you could apply to more stubborn substances before washing. running at 60-65c does a lot of unnecessary wear to fabrics and eats energy. you should separate by fabric color, type, care instructions, soil level. wash towels separately. don't leave zippers open. put small articles, and items with features that could tangle in other clothes (like drawstrings), in mesh bags. it isn't even that hard if you don't just dump everything into the same filthy basket.

grab a sanitizer additive or some antifungal tide pods or something. you're probably not running a covid clinic where every last exhaustive precaution must be taken at the expense of clothing longevity.
