yes, they're a necessary evil, but the internet is the backbone of the 21st century and its increasing proportion of 'energy use' represents us pivoting away from other, more co2-emitting, forms of human activity (% of electricity consumption and total co2 emissions are not necessarily the same thing.)
i suppose we should give up remote working lifestyles because *checks notes* the internet is polluting
