Pretty much this, telling a story. Mac has a lot of weird questions like this about games considering he's a 4x enjoyer.

either way not into cities skylines
Tons of rural builds out there, or builds with rural elements. It just operates differently than Sim City I guess. Like I said, a free weekend isn't a whole lot of time to do much more than learn.

The game is admittedly quite car-centric. You start off with a highway connection on your blank map. But car-free (or largely car-free) cities have a niche in this game's playthroughs. Helped along of course by mods and all-important DLC. The base game is probably the wrong thing to be playing if you want to do this.

Nothing against mods but I'd like to enjoy the base game before getting mods or dlc..

It's a good criticism of games like this, Sims, or even mac's Hearts of Iron where so many mechanics are locked behind DLC walls, and even certain mods require some DLCs to function properly.

CS is really one of those dollar-sink hobby games where you have to put in more than the $8 sale price for the base game if you want to maximise your experience with it. Look at all this DLC: https://store.steampowered.com/dlc/2557 … _Skylines/ (incidentally on sale)

Pretty sure you're going to need a handful if you want to optimize biking, walkability, and mass transit. Can always take a look at the dev's previous (?) Cities in Motion, but I'm not too familiar with it and can't say if it's better or worse.

Until someone comes up with a city planner to dethrone this, I guess it's kind of the option right now. I picked a huge chunk of these on some ultra-cheap bundle sale at one point with the intention of spending a few weekends burning time with it.

Risk of rain has been bought by gearbox.

Hope they don't ruin one of my favorite games

Well it's not as if Hopoo are making any more of it, but by being "Good Stewards" hopefully Gearbox doesn't mean they'll monetize it to oblivion. Ominous!

I don't know if I agree with gaming articles' sentiment that it's (among) the best coop games. Multiplayer games are made or broken by their communities, and ROR2 is plagued by quitters and non- team players. Does it have even the most basic anti-cheat protections?

My friends like opening it to pubs, which usually turns out to be a waste of time for some of the above reasons.

I don't know when or why Hopoo decided to stop, I hadn't been tracking their news page.

A game that impresses me with updates is Terraria. I thought they were done with it years ago but I guess they aren't? What's going on with that? I miss some of the old timey glitches and trolls. Flood the world by exploiting fluid physics in a <20x20 box.

I downloaded the free CoD battle royale/Tarkov version thing on the recommendation of friends as someone who hasn't played since CoD4. It's certainly echoes CoD but feels different. The PUBG downing mechanics and the armor-breaking do seem comical compared to hardcore CoD back in the day with only a few hits to kill. There's a loooooottttt of stuff going on with the interfaces and the console influence (I never could figure out how to mute some guy on my team playing music until he died). It crashes a lot, but I'm sure it could be decently fun with friends if you know what you're doing.

I'm kinda disinclined to play as a solo though, because you run the odds with randoms and seemingly come up against friend groups a fair bit.

Every time I see a game with the gamble-lootboxes, and all the one-time-only, holiday/etc. events capitalising on people's fear of missing out, I just feel less inclined to engage with modern gaming. Just too many titles competing for my spare time, intentionally designed to keep me grinding for as many hours as possible for a digital cosmetic that will go away when the game does.

CoD4 was great. Fond memories of being a camping scumbag with a slienced rifle and UAV jammer, effectively invisible for most of the match. Complete and utter area denial. The only thing better was making the trek to an enemy airfield in BF2 to snipe each prospective pilot the moment they entered their aircraft. Fond memories of escaping from angry hunts, meanwhile my team taking map control.

Aoe2 and drg events aren't bad. Drg takes like 5 missions and aoe2 is playing once a day or so for 5 days or so.

DRG is tolerable. The rewards don't look all that good, and as I understand it, you can just buy the cosmetics later on with that purple crystal you can hack out of walls in-game. The seasons seem completable in a short time over a long period of time. Very relaxed.

I mean the other rewards. The cosmetics, of course, are all subjective. And if I read the patch notes correctly, you can just buy them for minerals later on.

Extra note: imo the little percussion double-tap on mission completion sounds like the start to 20th century fox:

have fun with that

I like drg but since it's released I've "only" played.it for 50hrs or so. Over 3 years. Like half of that was the first month I bought it

50 hours sounds like enough time to unlock about everything that isn't a cosmetic. Should give it another shot if you haven't lately. Big updates, but I'm thinking about "boxing" it after this season. They're still really stingy with loadout slots, and it gets stale. So many combinations, so few places to save them.

Not sure how long you have to refund a game on steam beyond the two hour thing? Days Gone is probably past that point, even though I only have like 30 minutes in the game. 30 minutes spent perusing the many grim EULA and TOS popups like they're a contract with the devil. 1/4 of the time I'd have to actually play.

I think I'm over it now. I'll reinstall, then try and give this game an actual go so I can give mac and j-nummers my estimation of it.

ps-e: I didn't realize (or blocked it out since) that I'd only been on those menus for 30 minutes. It felt like my entire evening and a weekend of gaming mood gone. There's probably some baggage there not entirely this particular game's fault. I remember that one zombie game that flagged and mass-banned people for a string of false positives on its built-in spyware? It was a big drain on my enthusiasm for the industry.

Warhammer Darktide came out, fun but as usual tons of issues. People still defend companies over shit releases. Even blaming the holiday season for early release when the game has been delayed like 3 times. L m a o

How the fuck private games aren't a thing on release in a coop game  I don't know

Callisto Protocol is a mess, sitting on 38%. They stuck in ever-popular Denuvo DRM at the last minute, and there are the what I now guess are standard release day performance issues. I bring this up because Callisto defenders are pointing at Darktide as another game with at-release performance issues. Somehow, it comes out with better reviews. I don't know how much that can be attributed to 40k fans alone. Lots of 40k games get turd ratings.

I'm seeing elsewhere that this is blamed on shaders not pre-compiling on games using Unreal Engine 4. I don't know about the details to that, the last UE I dug into was for UT2004.

I have a vast tolerance for development delays, especially considering COVID times. Would rather see games like Darktide delayed 3 more times than play them in a sorry state. I thought about it last month when I snagged the free copy of Vermintide 2, but something in the back of my mind told me to wait.

Darktide had reviews in beta help carry it over, but sooooo many people thought release would fix everything it's hilarious. It doesn't run well but it runs.

I've been waiting for darktide for ages. Release isn't much worse than what I expected. Got into the closed beta and it went well enough for me to buy it.
