amazing. two-day quarantine. that's surely sufficient. From Saturday morning, travellers will only be allowed to enter France from the UK if they are travelling for “compelling reasons”, unless they are French nationals, residents or hauliers.
Even then, those wanting to travel will have to show a negative Covid test and self-isolate for two days after arriving in the country.
On Saturday, Veran said the rapid spread of the new variant was the main reason for the planned introduction of a new vaccination pass early next year, which will require that people show proof of vaccination to enter restaurants and long-distance public transport.
Under the current health pass regulation, a recent negative Covid test is sufficient for entering public places.
The alternative is to let covid run wild and mutate faster than the vaccines can keep up, there's no endgame there.uziq wrote:
you have alternately spoken in support of total travel bans and for states introducing measures to get rid of 'non-essential' tourists.
you highlighted it yourself about two pages ago in a post.
i suppose contradicting yourself is easily done when your views make zero fucking sense.
a total ban on the movement of people/goods is a practical impossibility. restricted travel with perfect quarantine systems and foolproof testing is also an impossibility, averaged over enough people in a given system. with delta/omicron's transmissibility, even one exception to the rule can derail an entire suppression strategy.
even IF such a hermetically sealed border were attainable, what would be the end-point? for how long? with what aim? totally extinguishing covid within a given nation? then what? to never re-open or re-engage with the rest of the world for the next 5 years? 10 years? do you even think through these things which you so arduously assert the necessity of? what's the actual measurable, achievable end-goal of travel bans in the medium or long term?
countries bigger and more populous than the state of SA can't disengage and decouple from the world system indefinitely. that's not how it works. how else would you receive your indian-made german shoes and florida workshop springs in the post?

that window is long gone. the world had a chance to truly lockdown for 2 months and covid wouldve been gone. but then again certain governments told people "good luck lmao" without any form of support... well you can see what happens.Dilbert_X wrote:
In the meantime multiple states, countries, can just close themselves off at no cost indefinitely, or at least less cost than remaining open - why wouldn't they do it?

Hey just think, if China and Fauci had told the world what they were facing in October 2019, instead of concealing it, then we could well have snuffed this thing out.uziq wrote:

america really fucekd it up lol, donald went from "lets block china nd stopp this" to "its a flu" right quick. with china... its classic local officials trying to cover up a problem by arresting people for talking smack.Dilbert_X wrote:

There's a lot to unpack there, in a lot of potential directions. The Newsmax/etc. version of course probably unabashedly being Fauci commissioned a bioweapon. You of course being of the demographic that was so hesitant to get vaccinated, and in-line with other related and unrelated ideas from Republicans and astroturfers, I have to wonder. You tell the Germans they're stupid then.Larssen wrote:
Dilbert have you considered that if you ground all airlines worldwide for 2 months the virus can still spread over land?
Have you also considered the economic/societal consequences of stopping air travel entirely?
Not to say that sensible travel restrictions when a dangerous variant emerges aren't useful, but these are and should be temporary and do not suddenly eliminate a virus.
