you don't need to motion at the defense budget. the US (and, eventually, the EU) just printed trillions of dollars in relief funds for covid. of course, most of it went to big business and corporations, and notably to people like jeff bezos, but there we are.

the major crises of 2008 and covid-19 have shown that the neoliberal understanding, of world banks being there to regulate markets and avoid politics, is a complete illusion. in the face of crisis it is apparently completely fine for the world banks to make political interventions to 'keep the system running'. money machine go brrrr, etc etc.

It's just one of the things to motion at. "Where is the money going to come from" is like the go-to excuse to turn down every service or effort that someone doesn't like because socialism and liberals and lying climatologists. Screw the epidemiologists!

But America could afford stuff, if it wanted.

As the coronavirus pandemic approaches the end of a second year, the United States stands on the cusp of surpassing 800,000 deaths from the virus, and no group has suffered more than older Americans. All along, older people have been known to be more vulnerable, but the scale of loss is only now coming into full view.

Seventy-five percent of people who have died of the virus in the United States — or about 600,000 of the nearly 800,000 who have perished so far — have been 65 or older. One in 100 older Americans has died from the virus. For people younger than 65, that ratio is closer to 1 in 1,400.

Sounds like some of this kid's problems are stemming from his immediate family, who know better than literally every single authority figure in medicine. Of course it would extend that he would know better than the authority figures at school.

I would hope they teach you how (and give you administrative tools) to handle such cases. If not, get your butt out of the trenches and into upper administration asap I guess. But RIP the people staying teachers, the position this country is in such desperate need of.

Above: teachers working the kind of respectable job their parents told them they should get while they were kids.

I love this video. Very good illustration of one of the things wrong with this country, probably right over the heads of the crowd. I mentioned "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?" in the other thread. I guess this could also be a proto squid game.

Never heard of that movie. Looked up the ending. Downer. You know those were real right? Dance marathons during the Great Depression?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dance_marathon

Colleges still do them though the idea is to raise money for blah blah. I didn't remember colleges did them until I read the article and remembered seeing news about ones going on at my school back in 201X

Yeah, Seattle banned that stuff in the 20s. A college dance marathon for charity as long as it's done more or less safely, probably not as bad as the ones that went on for weeks.

Having a bunch of teachers squabble for dollar bills for school supplies, for the amusement of a jeering pig person crowd. At least Nickelodeon would have made a game show of it and sprayed them with slime.

so travel restrictions didn’t do anything to halt the spread of omicron. it’s taking off globally. china, australia, new zealand … pretty much every ‘model’ country to use stringent travel measures, before as now, couldn’t even attempt to keep it out before xmas/new years. ditto on its arrival in the U.K.

it’s so prevalent and is so obviously doing its own thing regardless of human action/intervention, that the U.K. have just abandoned the pretence of its travel ban list. which makes perfect sense, considering how dumb it is to block travel from 11 african countries when omicron is, er, everywhere.

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/20 … takes-hold

but dilbert, lo, claims it’s easy and practical to control its spread!

Well the world doesn't really have travel restrictions at present, so of course they aren't working.

Thank god the French aren't as stupid and one-eyed as you.

As we've been hearing, France is set to tighten Covid restrictions for travellers arriving from the UK, as its government tries to slow the spread of the Omicron variant.

From Saturday all non-residents will have to give a compelling reason for travelling to France - tourism and non-urgent work do not qualify.

i'm sure tightening travel restrictions will stop the spread of omicron, considering its r-factor is estimated at between 3-5 at present.

if france even has a few hundred cases of omicron at present (they're reporting 170 so expect it to be 10x higher), closing the borders will do nothing. to retard the spread of such an infectious disease, you need full-scale lockdowns or circuit breakers at the very least. let's see how 'smart' and guided by scientific thinking the french are in coming weeks, shall we? i mean it's not like parisians can't spread it to one another on their packed metro system during rush hour and christmas shopping season.

many countries who have closed their borders are already reporting omicron cases/clusters.

still you seem to think that banning tourists is going to miraculously change the tide. incredible. about the best it will do is make a fractional difference to their caseload. best case scenario that could buy them some time for boosters or to prepare hospitals. but unlikely, considering that omicron is basically doubling itself every few days in any country posting numbers.

dilbert: well-done israel for closing their borders immediately as soon as omicron was announced. this is how we beat this thing.

israel: '55 case of omicron reported'.

also israel: 'level of omicron cases thought to be much higher than reported'.

what was that you were saying?

oh look, a chinese national returning from a business-trip, and who did 2 weeks quarantine and took multiple tests, ended up reporting positive for omicron. but good job france! your new policy of banning tourists will do it.

as was seen with the much less transmissible delta variant in new zealand, it only takes one case to seed an uncontainable cluster of 100s. omicron is an order of magnitude more infectious. your applause over banning tourists is just so funny. you're shouting into a gale, you moron.

It's no secret that service-related job demand went down with the onset of the pandemic. Those jobs will eventually come back, but the consumer used the money they were spending on bars and restaurants to buy stuff online. Bye bye bartender and server, hello Gatorade piss bottle delivery driver and frazzled warehouse worker.
