I met two americans today who were trump supporters (unicorns to me really), it was interesting to see them wave away literally all his media blunders and controversial statements. Even the 'mexicans are rapists' bit. They were convinced his policies were fantastic, and held the opinion that if he could 'speak like Obama' people would worship Trump.

What also struck me is that they were very steeped in some sort of self victim complex. They felt they couldn't ever talk about their views in the USA and that white men were hounded by the democrats/liberal media/population at large.

Another point of interest was that they felt Fox News wasn't at all an overly biased source. Liberal media was just as bad. Also, my opposition to Trump/Fox was because of my own bias.

It was sad in a way cause they struck me as otherwise reasonable. I just don't understand how they managed to decouple Trump's statements and actions entirely, and also strongly believed that he had tons of merit in what he did. 'The economy was booming under Trump'. Also insisted Biden is terrible & would be worse, even despite Trump's covid handling.

They are idiots. Not worth trying to understand them. Special snowflakes steeped in Identity politics.  The most important thing about them is that they support and identify with a president who's no longer in office. That should tell you plenty.

Most Trump supporters have football brains and watch reality television.

That is a punch in the gut of familiarity for me.

They're unassailable. Internalized to the point of fight/flight reflex if probed, and encased in resounding certainty. Finding a Trumper you can break down with facts and logic is like snapping a clear photo of Bigfoot. Usually the most you'll accomplish is make them withdraw and sulk.

Your description gives me sickening chills. You may have seen my post in the work thread the other day. It was the white persecution thing that finally pushed the guy over the edge. "They told me I was evil because I'm white!" red-faced, chop-motion stiff-finger pointing for violent emphasis. "Was it white privilege when my dad got hurt at his job, or when I struggled in my 20s?" Making a show of overriding response, interjection, or calming by restarting the sentence more loudly like some town hall blowhard.

Like first off, who is "they?" I can never get a specific answer out of that. Second, white privilege and rich privilege are to oversimplify, different components on a Venn diagram. His dad's boss and his older bosses were white men taking advantage of a poor workforce, derp.

I still have anxiety today over that blowout. I hope your Trumpers were at least otherwise amiable.

Ah they were nice and conceded that it was better that he left office after I explained to them how Europeans/the rest of the world perceived and experienced the Trump administration. I think it hit a little close when I denoted him an American version of Putin. (Though that would give a bit too much credit to Trump's intellect)

So much to process there, newbie. Really grateful you shared.

Do any white people work at your job? And I did warn you in the past not to talk to these pig people about stuff like this.

The trick I use to get through situations like this is to not care about the other person to the point where I don't even value their opinion. That's why you will never see me arguing at a protest. I refuse to even acknowledge the existence of pig people. It's like arguing with a barking dog. I don't care what a dog is up to or thinking.

I fall into the trap that I otherwise like talking about history, politics, social issues and so on. I try not to open a conversation about that at work, but then I am engaged with some tidbit and then absentmindedly formulate a response.

I hate to break out the old "ah, huh. Uh-huh, wow, really, that's interesting" as it's pretty transparent, but it might work on this guy for awhile. I just don't want to be a part of the next incident. If we had an HR department, I wouldn't be surprised if I'd had to have a talk with them today.

German is easily the best language both for shouting and insulting people.
They have some great words, and if you're still scratching around you can make up your own.

Online gamers under the age of 18 will only be allowed to play for an hour on Fridays, weekends and holidays, China's video game regulator has said.

The National Press and Publication Administration told state-run news agency Xinhua that game-playing would be only allowed between 8pm to 9pm.

It also instructed gaming companies to prevent children playing outside these times.

Earlier this month a state media outlet branded online games "spiritual opium".

south korea's government banned ... minecraft ... for youngsters, about 3 months ago.

east asian countries really raise their kids different. their lives consist almost entirely of school, after-hours cram schools, homework, and sleep. add to that the pressure to learn extra-curriculars, practice instruments, etc. yeah, no wonder that videogames are seen as 'idle' distractions.

i read a journal article the other week about educational attainment in the US. an uncomfortable truth about asian students' high attainment is that they're literally forced to do about 2.5 hrs extra schooling a day, in their home life. you can't adjust for that in an education system.

Probably the wrong way to address things like media addiction and work/life balance issues.

Not to mention that Minecraft has a bunch of STEM stuff in various pockets of the player base and can be a learning tool itself.

anyway, in your dragon ball terms:

NYC just passed a big bill to give protections for delivery app workers. Good but I expect a big increase in fees on consumers. These delivery app companies weren't profitable before the pandemic. Maybe the pandemic fixed things.

And critical shortages go beyond the classroom — hundreds of schools are hard-pressed to find bus drivers, after many have retired or decided to not risk COVID-19 exposure. Up to 250 National Guard service members will drive students to school in Massachusetts, and school leaders in Philadelphia are encouraging their governor to consider the same. Efforts to engage the National Guard in New York were rejected by Gov. Kathy Hochul; a spokesperson for her team said school transportation was “outside [their] current scope.”
See? Military spending does pay off.

Clearly they were paying their workers too much.

Don't these people even understand how to capitalism?

is this the same edgelord who thinks that a rich kid who
failed upwards and founded a space company is ‘a great success’? because ‘capitalism’ and the private sphere have finally matched 1970s space progress and shaved off some notional launch costs? L O l l

just remember that in other contexts you’re only too happy to regurgitate the crypto-thatcherite line that ‘private industry and competition leads to better results than state-funded enterprise’.

reminder that uber has never been profitable and tesla, the most valued car company in the world, has only scraped a profit for about two financial quarters in its entire history. the modus operandi for these SV ‘disruptors’ is always the fucking same.

my point is you’re snarky about capitalism in this context but elsewhere casually celebrate billionaires and call them ‘great successes’. LOL.

in other news, uber have been forced to backpay a pension for its ‘contractor’/‘freelance’ drivers, to 2017, and restaurants and hospitality venues have been banned from pocketing wait staffs’ tips (in the U.K.).

the labour power of basic jobs in things like hospitality and services is going way up due to pandemic shortages. britain currently has a critical shortage of heavy goods vehicle drivers.

they better take advantage of it before messiah elohim musk comes along with his self-driving miracle truck.

Chipotle customer pulls gun after being told location was closing early, police say
https://news-yahoo-com.cdn.ampproject.o … 00686.html

A customer became angry that a Philadelphia Chipotle was closing early, pulled a gun and demanded that “somebody better give me my food,” police said Wednesday.

The terrifying confrontation unfolded just before 5 p.m. Saturday at the chain's location inside Roosevelt Mall on Cottman Avenue, Philadelphia police said in a statement.

The store was closing its in-person service early because of staffing issues, but it told customers it would still take online orders, police said.

Surveillance video showed the woman, in a gray top and pink pants, reach into her purse, pull a gun and gesture toward workers behind the counter.

The woman demanded to speak to the store's manager as a button was pushed to call mall security to the scene, police said. An employee complied and made the woman's order "in an effort to have her leave," police said.

Even after the order was completed, the woman pulled her gun again, police said. That is when she made her demand, took the meal and left, officials said.

Anyone who recognizes the woman is asked to call detectives at 215-686-3153.
