Here's a really good video showcasing part of the vaccine scare life cycle.

Bigtext: VACCINES LINKED TO HORRIBLE THING
Much smaller text after initial scare: horrible thing is a very rare side effect (or "may be linked," underneath in the description)
Much, much smaller text, halfway through: the benefits of a vaccine outweigh the potential risks
Youtube comments: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!
Expecting in my email the next morning: how is your heart feeling?
Me: "Oh so you saw that in the news the other day? Did you pay attention to the whole report?"
Them: "Of course I did!" (lie)

Dilbert several posts up: I don't want blood clots.
Also dilbert: I don't believe that crazy conspiracy stuff.

@mac yeah, that really sucks. I'm not convinced it does much good to cancel all that stuff for kids when adults are going back to business as usual. Just more bitter resentment and compliance-weariness.

@mmfmmfmmf
I'd just assume I'd been exposed if the company refuses to help out with contacts.

I look forward to the next run of this stuff where apparently I'll grow hooves because of the Pfizer mRNA. Email: "how's your feet?"

I'm positive I've been exposed but vaccinated. If I got it bad then I'd make a stink.

Cancelled proms, outdoor proms, mini proms. No post graduation/prom trips and parties. Feel bad about the children losing this once in a lifetime opportunity but the important thing is that adults in their 40's were still able to go to bars and restaurants in 2020.
None of my adult friends talk about their prom or grad parties. It's a big deal when you're 18, but not significant enough to reminisce about when you're 30.

A big deal for a kid can still be a nice memory even if you don't necessarily reminisce about it all the time.

A lot of people don't make it to 30.

the governments of western nations already 'force' vaccines for measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) and tuberculosis on schoolchildren generally. one needs a damn good reason to except one's child from the de rigueur 'TB jab' in the UK.

why dilbert thinks a mandatory covid vaccine, a deadly and highly contagious disease which has caused more global disruption than measles ever did, is 'controversial', is hilarious. what a fucking kook. think a little less about israel and 'dirty indians' and consider a little more basic public health measures. it's not totalitarianism, you kook.

Heartlessly keeping Australians stranded in other countries is obviously a better solution than people getting vaccinated for that holy grail of herd immunity. Big of me to criticize though considering states here are having to bribe people to get the thing.

dilbert: though alcohol has obvious harms and health risks, i weigh the costs and benefits and consume alcohol.

also dilbert: no way am i having a vaccine with a 1 in a million chance of causing a bad side effect!

Israel being a case study, it's concerning to see that since the start of april vaccination numbers have stagnated at 60% of the population. Meaning about 40% just isn't getting one. Ridiculous

Most of those people either never really lived here or left the country by choice for spurious and trivial reasons knowing it would be next to impossible to get back. Now they're in literally the worst affected place in the world and coming here would put the whole country at risk.
They were stupid and their selfishness has caused multiple lockdowns and cost the country billions.

Pretty well six months without transmission here, I'd be fine with keeping the borders shut a while longer and fine-tuning the vaccines, not rushing it so we can 'open up travel' for the travel junkies.

That closely matches the ratio for my gaming buddies. Among those who haven't got it, a common theme is they'll let other people "take the risk" first. Of course when herd immunity suffers for it, the vaccine will be labeled ineffective in their eyes.

It's been awhile since I got my Pfizer. Where's my Microsoft uplink? My magnet superpowers?

China’s state-run Global Times on Saturday compared demands for a more thorough investigation of the “lab leak hypothesis” – the theory that the Chinese coronavirus escaped from a Chinese virology lab in Wuhan – with the hunt for weapons of mass destruction (WMD) in Iraq.

In other words, the Chinese paper claimed Western intelligence services are using disinformation to whip their populations into war fever against China.
That's actually a pretty biting analogy.

yeah we left an open goal for criticisms like that. the shadow cast by the blair-bush war years is a very long one.

russia has used the same playbook for its own cynical geopolitical ends too.

The thing that sucks about people like that is that if they survive they become even more sure COVID is no big deal.

Prev guy I talked about hasn't mentioned it much. Admits he had short term memory loss, I think he still does, and it kicked his butt at least.

The government here has agreements for enough Pfizer to cover everyone.  And enough Astra, and Janssen and J&J to cover everyone.  So 20 million full vaccinations worth for 5 million people.  A multiple redundancy approach to security of supply.

I have to wait until September to get mine.
