I looked up what the New York Times said back in spring. So we are nearly double the lowest projection for deaths.Between 160 million and 214 million people in the United States could be infected over the course of the epidemic, according to a projection that encompasses the range of the four scenarios. That could last months or even over a year, with infections concentrated in shorter periods, staggered across time in different communities, experts said. As many as 200,000 to 1.7 million people could die.
I think once we get through this winter of pain things will start to get better. The change in political leadership will result in progress on getting things under control. I am not saying that just because I am bias. Multiple vaccines, the federal government throwing more money into healthcare, and a change in weather getting people out of deadly subways and buses will all help.
I also think that our economy will recover pretty quickly once we get mass vaccination working.
meanwhile the UK is posting record death numbers too - based on a rolling average infection rate that, 3 weeks ago, was 1/2 the current numbers of new infections. so we're going to go up and up throughout january, most likely.

An increase of 14%.
In addition, the percentage of the population aged over 65 increases every year.

NHS 'winter' crises were already happening all year round - despite underhand rationing of NHS services - long before the pandemic arrived.
The collapse of the NHS now is entirely a consequence of a decade of Conservative government and real-terms cuts.

If the right hon. and learned Gentleman is now saying he wants to protract them beyond 2 December, then perhaps he should make his position clear.

China has announced the virus didn't come from bats or pangolins - which is good news for bats, but hasn't said where it did come from - how long before we can nuke them?
My uncle's partner is in hospital (uk) and isn't expected to survive, they're late seventies, she's had a severe heart condition since birth, he hasn't been instructed to have a test but presumably is infected too so likely bad news for him.

you need a negative test before boarding a plane and you need to self-quarantine. no special requirements.
no 'severe visa restrictions' or whatever it is you've been calling for.
but, otherwise, yes: basically sane and sensible airport controls. no idea why these weren't at heathrow by about week 3.
it's a bit of a stretch to call it 'quarantine, testing, etc'. you have to sort your own test before getting on a plane to come here and you have to self-quarantine by basically making an extra nice promise to the good british government.
