Far Cry 5: 6/10. I actually like it a lot though I rage quit and uninstalled it once due to the capture party mechanic. Basically 4 times per each of the 3 regions, the boss of the region will randomly capture you and put you through story missions. You could be in the middle of a town with allies and all of a sudden you are in the story mission because you were "captured". So I am playing the game finishing quest and all of a sudden I was now forced to take part in the main story. It happens about once an hour which result in me quiting and only enjoying the game in hour sized bits. The worst capture party quest is the boss which puts you through the same times obstacle course 4 times and you need to successfully beat the clock each time. I hate time anything. An awful experience. Do not recommend. I will not buy Far Cry 6 unless it has been confirmed that such mechanic does not return.

I just looked at that. Always like checking out the steam reviews. It's hilarious how two- or three-word comments always get the most votes and awards.

Yeah I can see that. It was so annoying to me I guess that I'd blotted it out of my memory. The capture sequences don't really fit with the open world concept with a beastmaster that can Rambo around and basically do anything they want otherwise, does it? Feels very forced. I wouldn't even be so generous as to call it a "mechanic." I could see it in maybe a more linear game where your only path is forward.

Still, I found other parts of the game fun. And it was super amusing to me that the game pissed off so many Christians, when the American cultists you're fighting are definitionally, absolutely not Christian. Like why do you feel so attacked, bro?

But definitely not my favorite Far Cry still.

I think the family was obvious stand-ins for Christian conservatives. I do think that their complaints about being the politically correct target for something like this is somewhat valid.

Another complaint: where is my gore? I am not asking for a bloodbath after every shot but gore has a role in at least letting me know I actually killed a target. There has been times where I shot a shotgun at an enemy only to see them disappear behind something and I am standing there wondering "Did I hit you?"

The big bad struck me as more of an extreme David Koresh analogy than anything like mainstream Christian conservatives. The people who were angry about it generally didn't play or even watch it be played. They seemed to be going off of commentary that aligned with their preconceived notions.

I remember reading an article from a pastor explaining why exactly the baddies weren't Christians. It's probably even safe to bet that the Small Town, America resistance fighters were. Wasn't one of the resistance guys a priest? You even met at the church.

DK was a Christian even if he believed he was the Christ. And if you listen to what the FC5 family is preaching it obviously isn't Christianity.

But at a quick glance you can mistake the FC5 group for rural Christians. And I think a lot of people who have no issue with that mistake being commonplace would be in an uproar if FC7 was set in the Middle East and you had to kill a group reminiscent of the Taliban and Muslim people. But those games are common enough already so the fact that rural people are the bad guys this one time is fair enough even if it makes the rest of us hypocrites.

I want a Far Cry set in the Middle East by the way. I would like to fight and dress up as ISIS ninjas.

Well it's official. I am done with Far Cry 5. I don't have the motivation to continue on in the game. I got yanked out of the open world to do a story mission that requires me to sneak through a base and silently kill people. I hate sneaking missions like this and I hate that I was yanked out of the open world. Interestingly, same thing happened in Far Cry 4 that made me quit. Got yanked into a "sneak out of capture" story mission that I had no patience to finish either.

Here are some screenshots to go with my whining.

I saw this mountain lion chasing down a deer. I ran after the two of them. The lion killed the deer and started to eat him. I came up behind the lion and beat it with a pipe. The two models then fused together.

Since I am in my screenshot folder, I am going to finish the story of the Normans of Sicily that I started here.

After the Mongol Empire destroyed my overlord the Byzantine Empire, I was an independent King of Sicily. I only controlled a smatter of castles along North Africa and was surrounded by strong Muslim neighbors. I was able to retake Sicily from a Mongol splinter group and continue my conquest of Egypt. My empire was still weaker than the Kingdom of Morocco and many other Muslims though. So I looked for a new overlord. The German Holy Roman Emperor was strong and steady. So I converted from Orthodox back to Catholic and swore fealty to the Holy Roman Empire. I was now a vassal of the Holy Roman Empire and responsible for their Mediterranean holdings.

While all of this was going on, the Mongol Empire successor states imploded totally. Everything east of Berlin and Cairo is a mess of small Orthodox, and Sunni kingdoms and duchies now.

At this point I had a choice of conquering into the Middle East on my own or doing something else. I decided to instead focus on the west where the other Catholics were. I noticed in Iberia, the Reconquista failed and multiple Muslim kingdoms were starting to invade southern France. So I decided now was the time to take over Iberia before the western Muslims got too strong. I launched a holy war directly at the Muslim king of Aragon and took over the castle of Valencia as starting point. The Pope at this point declares a Crusade for Jerusalem and I was able to instead convince him to direct the Crusade into Iberia. This Crusade smashes the strongest Iberian Muslim kingdom and starts a 100 years of all out war between the new Crusader State of Andalusia, the Normans of Sicily and Egypt, the Spanish Kingdom of Castile, and the Kingdom of France against the Muslims of Iberia and Morocco. The Moors of Morocco at one point were so weakened by these wars I able to invade and capture the Kingdom of Morocco. By the end of the game I had conquered the entirety of Spain, Sicily, Naples, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Morocco, Jerusalem, Aleppo, and Raqqa. By this point, I had become more powerful than the Holy Roman Emperor. I asked for and was granted independence. I then moved my court to Egypt which was the most wealthy part of my empire. I cultured shifted to Outremer culture (French/Arab mix) and then declared myself Emperor of Egypt thereby an equal of the Holy Roman Emperor.

This is my empire at its height.

And this is the religious map of the world. Islam has been humbled by the Normans.

I like the game play but this game is a chore. I am almost 3 hours in and now am going on a train robbery. I just want to get into the open world and explore. There is no way the story can be worth the investment asked of me.

the introductory chapter is very long and a drawn out, i agree. there's quite a lot of mechanics the game introduces right up until the middle chapters, actually. just try and adapt a little more to the cinematic pace.

i actually spent ages in chapter 1/2, just as you get left in the open world, doing meaningless chores, hunting, building up some money and exploring, etc. i was in no hurry to do the story bits. i guess if you've played any rockstar games title in the last 10 years, the story missions and set-pieces can't be all that surprising, in any case.

what's great about RDR2 is the level of detail in the world and the amount of incidental/emergent stuff that comes up. the world feels more vividly realized than a GTA game. but the missions are more or less GTA-redux. there will be robberies. there will be chases. there will be kill missions, etc.

the REAL greatness of the game is in its writing and storyline, actually. i haven't completed it yet but it already seems very good, again cinematic. it seems grittier and darker than the sort of cartoonish caricature of GTA, which tries to have its cake and eat it by being simultaneously overblown and silly AND to make edgy commentary. RDR2 does it much, much better i think.

I think GTA has always been a little on the silly side, like James Bond. Saints Row is to GTA what Austin Powers is to 007. I may get around to RDR2 eventually. I have to admit I never finished RDR1, but the same could be said of a ton of open world games I own (Black Flag, FC Primal, Borderlands 1/2 a few exceptions).

I read part of your CK playthrough Mac, it's just that I've played so many paradox 4x it all kind of runs on.

i've never played RDR as i've skipped consoles for the last 15 years or so. missed the boat on that one.

RDR2 is a prequel, though (which comes with some attendant spoilers, then). you can play RDR2 without needing to know anything about RDR.

i had zero interest in the theme either, but it's pretty engrossing. it's the first single-player game i've enjoyed in many years. definitely stick with it past the tutorial/intro zone, is all i'll say. by all accounts it gets off to a very slow start.

my interest in cowboys and the wild west extends about as far as cormac mccarthy's 'blood meridian' and ennio morricone music.

without wanting to introduce any spoilers, the setting of RDR2 is a bit wider than just pioneer-western stuff. it's a bit of a weird mix of several american regions in a bigger, more ambitious snapshot of late-19th century america. there's a sort of louisiana/new orleans bit, as well as a proper desert, as well as sort of plains and indians, etc. it covers a lot. there's characters and side quests to do with eugenics, women's suffrage, the legacy of the civil war/war veterans, slavery, native indians, even the development of the electric chair ... as well as the usual mix of political satire, gangs, mayoral machinations, etc. it's good fun.

I was itching to play some Western instead of another futuristic space-marine game. I know they made several in this series but I likewise missed the boat until now and the closest I came was how Fallout: New Vegas had lots of revolvers and lever-action rifles.

Chapter 2 is also the area I spent the most time in. Getting the ability to manually tag dead-eye targeting, the off-hand holster, and rifle unlocks open it up and allow you to just fuck around, progress down some of the challenge trees, and explore the world. I am somewhat annoyed that like earlier GTA games there's a macguffin preventing you from exploring the whole world, but I understand it in the context of the game. I have found I actually have gotten absorbed into the character many times compared to other games. I hitch my horse, slowly walk down the sidewalk to a store, say hello to townsfolk as opposed to parking a car in the street in GTA and sprinting through the door. It's a very nice world to just exist in. I'm at 206 hours and am still in Chapter 3 at this point.

i don't know if it's a pc-only quirk, but weirdly the manual tagging in dead-eye disappears in a later chapter. ditto the ability to tag multiple things at once. it doesn't really make any difference with the mouse + keyboard but it is weird.

@df I hear Desperados 3 is pretty decent too, though sometimes steam's overwhelmingly positive can be a bit of a community-enforced bandwagon. Can you still downvote reviews? I don't remember.

Also of interest is This Land is My Land, flipping the old west video game genre on its head. Get rid of the cowboys. Been out for like a year and probably polished up pretty nicely in patches. Heard it compared to Mount & Blade, which is a plus since I don't remember any old west single player mods for that game. Supporter DLC is as much as the game itself I guess, but I spent money on world of tanks. Who am I to criticize.

I managed to progress through the arduousness of the Gambler challenges in RDR2 this weekend to win blackjack with 5 cards and win 3 dominoes games in a row. After that, 3 poker wins in a row was a piece of piss to cap off the set.
