What do you guys think of Jewish resistance in German-occupied Europe? I would say without a doubt it was instrumental to the war effort. Many of the great victories of World War 2 wouldn't have been possible without the contributions of Jews.

Starting World War 2 unit after break. Very excited to annoy Uzique with NPC talk for a few weeks.
It's possible that some of your students may develop more of an interest in this kind of material later in life, like so many other people seem to do. High school history as I recall is presented very dry and uninteresting, reduced to cramming faceless names and numbers. I get that dates and such are just a reality of learning history, but there was such a nerd-brain focus on them to the exclusion of telling human stories and their lessons. This seems to repel young brains.

Imperial Japanese Army flag.
I know many people in East Asia consider it a hate symbol. But what about here? I put together big slideshows for my kids. I would never use a Nazi flag or swastika because I don't want any parents to see their kids staring at that on their computer. But what about this? Can I put this on a cover of a slideshow since it doesn't carry weight here? I have 60 kids and only one Asian if that makes a difference.
And if displaying this flag isn't wrong here then why is it bad to display a Nazi flag? Americans suffered as many war crimes against us by the Japanese as the Germans did to us. Such a cool flag though. Why don't modern fascist have such good aesthetics?

it's not bad to display any of those flags in a history classroom. that's kind of the entire point of history classrooms.

It should be noted that variations of that flag are still used by today's JSDF, and likewise the old navy's by the JMSDF. The national flag did not change (e: apart from a different shade of red).

the only difference is that japan are mostly unrepentant and refuse to acknowledge the very real history. if anything, the japanese flag in those contexts still represents a greater legitimate offence. it’s more shocking, not less.
If anything, both flags should be used starkly in the specific context of classrooms. Forbidding the swastika probably only encourages its use in graffiti with kids who are drawn to the taboo shape. And yes, the difference between Germany and Japan's post-war attitudes is also huge and something that people shouldn't have to learn outside the classroom.
If Germany and Japan got their genocidal expansionism out of the way in the 1800s, maybe they'd have been more respectable. /s

No its not okay because you would be lying to them.. You should call them concentration camps to clarify what a concentration camp is so people don't only associate them with #WW2 #holocaust #jews #nazi

I really don't like focusing on the bad things America has done but I need to fill up this week with something. I am afraid of upsetting republican parents. One parent already reported a teacher for opening a class discussion on Christopher Columbus being a hero or not.
I think you're smart enough to find a way to present facts in a clear and concise way without showing personal bias. Presenting something as "this happened in the past" without providing historical context and motivating factors is teaching a factoid to students, not encouraging them to analyze and apply critical thought to history.
