We have some of these at work that are basically the size of an external CD drive, they're pretty cool

That sounds fantastic but I don't really want PCs to go the way of cart-before-the-horse printers. Sell the PC at a loss then nickel and dime with service fees. Ugh, I can see it now.

Fair enough for a little word processor and web browser I guess. For me, I probably wouldn't trust anything much smaller than

But then I still run the occasional game and productivity app.

I do like the pop-up handle on this case. So much better than the straps I used to use for a larger Lian Li (the side plate edges were freaking serrated so have fun carrying it just under an arm).

VDI docks? that’s what i was talking about. our office is almost 80% these now with imacs for the design work. they’re ... okay. all the usual problems you’d expect with slowdowns and memory/processor allocation when about 200 people are using clusters at the same time.

those cases are good enough to run top-end graphics cards and games. there’s videos of linus tech tips putting like top-end intel CPUs in them with nvidia titan GPUs or whatever. they’re very well made. the main drawback is the inevitable noise/temp and the fact they cost 2.5x a decent consumer case.

you would have to have a screw loose to pay $300 or whatever for one of those cases intended for a word processing machine. you could buy a whole PC suitable for that.

also that is the exact case i do have. the portable handle is very neat. you can see my build pics in the thread.

fair play, for all of their miraculously fast fortnite-playing processors, iphones are still hunks of shit at updating their own iOS/firmware.

a minor incremental update, i.e. the latest .1 revision of the iOS, takes AN AGE to install. a full 10-15 minutes to flash the firmware, multiple restarts, slow grinding unpacking and installation ...

Month 3 with a MacBook:

I like some of the stuff like the magnetized charger port that has a light on it to let you know it is doing it thing. I hate the inclusion of a Command button that does stuff I am used to the control button on a PC doing while there is still a control button on the MacBook. I do not like the fact that the window resizing buttons are on the left instead of right. Seems like something done only to differentiate it from Windows.

I have little interest in trying to learn MacOS or whatever it is called and just use the thing are a second screen to handle attendance/monitor Chromebooks while logged onto classes on my Win PC. I appreciate that the thing isn't forcing updates like Windows though neither would Ubuntu.

Glad I don't need a new video card for a PC build. I'd have to drive out of state to a microcenter. I can appreciate that a 3070 is an appreciable upgrade by like a 50% benchmarked margin to my 2070, but nothing has really stressed it all that much.

Will probably wait for a gen after when there's some appreciable breathing room for true 4k, +.

NVIDIA had the gall to send me a "3070 recommended" ray-tracing emailer for Cyberpunk 2077. One of the cards basically nobody can get right now outside of buying a new pre-built.

The only way I'd order one right now is if Keanu Reeves would hand deliver-it, signed. I'm pretty sure my current system could be optimized for the game, 2070 Super and all.

e: CP2077 is really being pushed right now. I just saw their sponsorship on the hot ones video with The Undertaker.

they are roping in a bunch of hipster bands and cool techno DJs too, giving them character model cameos and stuff in the game. it’s everywhere. they’re taking a GTA approach with the the multi-media assault.

part of me thinks it is going to flop hard. the gameplay footage itself looks crap. i really want to like this game but ... once again ...

I think the devs asked people early on not to preorder it. I don't know if that was legitimate sentiment or just a love letter to the part of gaming social media that hates pre-ordering. But at this point I'm just getting sick of seeing it. No pre-order bonuses last I checked on Steam, and I hope there's no exclusives for all the gamestops and best buys out there either. That's always bugged me.

An uninspiring composition for the leading screenshot into this article:

Cyberpunk 2077 ray tracing gameplay and RTX PC requirements revealed (11/20)

Some of the ray tracing shots kind of remind me of the look some older games have when given a remaster. It's definitely not the worst looking game I've seen, but for all the tech on display here it somehow still looks a little dated. Wouldn't stop me from playing it if I thought it would have a lasting impact like VTM Bloodlines though.

It's more exciting from the prospect of level design because you can light things more naturally and more quickly than with all the little tricks you'd normally have to employ to simulate those effects. I think some designers got so good at doing this that the ray-tracing advancement in video cards just doesn't look like much of a boost to some viewers.

For some things I guess you wouldn't want hyper-accurate lighting, though. I get that too.

I can have Norton Utilities Premium for free, should I get it for my old used to be Win 7 now Win 10 system or will it finally kill it while trying to fix something?
Booting is somewhat variable, most of the time it runs fine.

My experience in life is trying to fix things often ruins them.

You mean like a free year for 10 pcs? It's a $40 value. If you think you can be smart about it, go ahead. IMO people are just as likely to break things running a hodgepodge of driver updaters, multiple anti-virus/malwares, and ccleaner. I don't have recent personal experience with Norton, though I don't imagine it's as awful as its old reputation.

I've read that NUP even supports Win XP SP3, putting it in the dwindling number of utilities that do.

Looping back for a sec, that was kind of the point. All well and fine if things are running clean and smoothly, but you'll have to monitor thermals more closely and may have to take it apart more for frequent dusting. Fine if you're doing all that anyway. I'm loathe to screw around too often in a PC's innards, due to wear and tear.

You may be surprised what people might want in terms of cases for not the most powerful PC. I've built systems where the chassis maybe constituted a quarter of the total price. I think a $20 Rosewill could look slick enough, but it's their money I guess. Maybe I was exaggerating when I said "word processor PCs." Plenty of "office desktops" can handle a lot games just fine.

you don't have to take it apart more frequently for dusting or even necessarily monitor temps. large cases with lots of empty space gather dust more quickly. think about it: a small case with large fans has a much bigger pressure differential than a large roomy case. the dust and hot air can be more quickly and efficiently exhausted. granted, ambient temps might be higher if you don't put some high-quality fans in it, and the case noise will be higher dB than if you've got a giant case with 12 fans all idling at 300rpm.

the super slim boutique ones are, yeah, really pushing that principle, admittedly. they will run very hot and pretty noisily when you're playing games. but my micro-ATX case, with some nice fans and dust guards on all the entry/exit ports, is as immaculate as the day i put it together. no dust and no temp problems.

That depends. In some households a computer can collect quite a bit of dust in a short amount of time. Less surface area in a smaller case than a larger one. I would not leave a tiny case undusted for the same amount of time I've seen a larger case from the same building reach what I'll loosely call "critical mass." Granted it also depends on where someone's storing it. In larger cases, I've seen dust buildup on the interior mostly on the bottom half, with only a small bit on the upper half. Very nice that there was a six inch gap between the dust and the video card. A high air flow only really keeps working undisturbed as intended if it's not continually sucking up dust bunnies at those high RPMs. Ever had a vacuum clog?

Anyway it's very much a side point and kind of a necro reply. Just keep your PC clean and preferably off the floor …

e: I do recommend dust guards even if they can have a slight impact on airflow, but as usual people should make sure any buildup is kept cleaned.

So in good news for me, my father's computer was on it's way out. I had a spare due to my April upgrade. So basically I just refreshed Windows 10 on it and gave him a brand new PC. Reduce, Reuse, recycle.

I have three questions for you guys today.

This was the start up message he was getting that broke the camel's back.
https://i.imgur.com/lrhCeOf.png
If I am reading this correctly, Win 10 realized the hard disk was on its way out? The hard disc kept making this clanking noise whenever I used it the computer. The hard disk was only 5 years old.

Question 2

I yanked the dying hard disk out and was going to put an extra Win 7 SSD I had in it's place. I didn't back up anything before performing computer surgery because I have a cord like this that is supposed to plug SATA drives into USB.
https://i.imgur.com/cGqg0Hw.png
The thing worked on my SSDs but didn't work on the hard disc. I assume the USB isn't drawing enough power to turn on the hard disc? Thoughts?

Final question

I have two extra PCs that are pretty old (i5 2600k and FX-4300) but run fine. The i5 scares me though. The PSU looks like a fire hazard and the PC is the bigger piece of shit of the two. Looks like it got hit by a car. And it smells like smoke. (I don't smoke). What do I do with these two things? Just put them in sealed plastic cases and throw them in storage?

Thank you for the help
