what is ‘the real world’? is that where these ‘real people’ you keep talking about reside? help me, i work in an office and exist in the tertiary and quaternary sectors. unlike everyone else in the western world, of course, who are up to their elbows birthing calves or having their sight burnt away by the hot blasts of furnaces.

Anyone here ever read the Clockwork Orange? I was watching a few clips on youtube and thought a little about it and how it relates to recent discussions regarding another movie that shall not be named.

The violence in the movie is pretty repulsive. And I am glad I am mature enough to see it that way. Unfortunately there is a good amount of people who buy into the imagery of the movie and I feel that they have missed the point unless I was the one who missed it. The book was very critical of violence but the movie seemed to revel in it? From what I have read the ending to both of them are completely different. There was someone that said when talking about another movie that "you can't make an anti-war movie without creating a movie that appeals to some people's affection for war" Does that apply to Clockwork?

They raped a ten year old girl in the book. The movie didn't even dare go there.

From what I had read there are a few moments like that in the book. Not including that is part of why I think the movie failed to get the message of the book out. Child rape is genuinely repulsive and no one would want to dress up as Alex if they saw stuff like that being committed. Also making Alex a good looking actor didn't help.

If you're planning on reading the book, I don't know how much I want to say. It didn't go a lot into imprisonment like the movie did, and didn't really leave you with much of a "cliffhanger."

Interesting article on the movie:

THE UNCOMFORTABLE HUMOR OF A CLOCKWORK ORANGE

I don't really agree with the assessment of Alex as an antihero in the sense I usually see the word used, but whatever.

I read the wiki and feel like I missed out on nothing. So in the book they randomly beat an academic up and rob a small business before the rape. In the movie the small business isn't robbed and instead of an academic getting beat up, they beat up a homeless person.

It's obvious whitewashing of Alex since people would identify more with an academic and small business owners instead of a homeless person since it is a crime against God to be poor in this country. And the fact that they turned his rape of two small children into a cool sequence where he has a threesome says a lot about how they want people to perceived the character.

I really hate movies that glamorize violence like this. Fight Club is still my favorite movie though it also screws up a lot of the message of that book which I in fact read.

IIRC he was also in his mid-teens in the book. I think Malcolm was in his late 20s when he took the role.

Did you know they made a sequel to Ready Player One? It is called Ready Player Two. Just the title made me groan.

Its box office success was probably contributed to by the movies it was competing with. They spent almost as much marketing it as making it. It made 140 million more than needed to break even.

For me, RP1 wasn't particularly enthralling or memorable. I couldn't begin to tell you about the plot or list any of the character names. But I guess some Hasbro toys and maybe Nintendo characters made an appearance? I think?

Ready Player Two isn't a bad title, considering. Same as the book (I haven't read the series), and better than "Ready Player One 2" or "Ready Player One: Vengeance" or "Player One." Third movie could just be "Player" with that last one.

It crammed all the media franchises it could into it, even just for 2seconds of screentime. Nintendo, lots of old games, BttF, Gundam, Halo,  that's all I remember from the trailers.

You are now validated by paying maybe three dollars more at a bookshop than on the internet. A soldier in the war against megacorps!

I don't know enough about the North African campaign to really comment on how good of a general he was. I think Patton was overrated and a massive prick. He would have fit in with the Trump administration.

I think the Eastern Front German commanders did pull off some amazing stuff even if they didn't win the war. Their loss probably had more to do with things out of their hands than their ability as commanders.

Rommel was competent but most of all benefitted from huge western media attention. The 'stars' of the german armed forces were in the eastern front. Notably manstein.

Also Guderian's book especially is full of embellishments and exaggeration. This is true for WW2 memoirs in general. Still a good read, but it's removed from the true history.

i swear this conversation has been had about 20 times on this board alone. this is the closest thing to NPC talk that history as a discipline has.

World war 2 is massively boring honestly because the history has been recycled so, so much. I can barely even enjoy any media situated in or around WW2 anymore.

the sort of books that dilbert buys for his 'historical knowledge' are the bread and butter of the nonfiction book trade. world war 2, books about hitler specifically, and books about henry viii or the tudor court. year in, year out, the books keep coming. honestly i don't know how many more times i need someone to start collaring me about rommel's reputation or the legacy of the prussian junkers or whatever.
