He's mostly right, but it's not unprecedented. My dad was deployed to put down anti-war protesters in Washington DC in the early 70s while he was on active duty.

I would also argue that Obama made very little effort to unite the country. It's become nearly universal among politicians in this country to only care about their constituents, and by constituents I don't mean their city, county, state or country, I mean the very narrow sliver of people that fund their political campaigns and reliably vote for them. Almost no effort is made to actually govern, let alone unite, at any level. Identity group politics has thoroughly shredded American society. Now it's easier than ever to divide and conquer.

It's not the democrats' fault republicans have gone off the deep end. With a president like Trump there is no argument to be had. Conspiracy theories, lies, anti-intellectualism and simply outrageous behaviour dominate in that party. How is it Obama's fault they caved to Breitbart and manipulative authoritarianism? I can follow the argument that it resulted from structural issues in the United States but Obama didn't at all strike me as a deeply unreasonable asshole. The fact that the rest of the world got along with him just fine should give you enough of a clue. The world didn't get along with the neocons, cheney & bush at the start of this century, Trump is several times worse.

Contrast Obama's policy priorities and speeches with that of ANY republican candidate in the last 4 presidential election cycles and he's clearly better. America has deep issues with a large part of its population having a preference for candidates who 'tell it like it is', i.e. fucking morons, over people who can actually construe coherent sentences and arguments.

He was consensus-seeking, whereas the republicans tend to deliver 'world leaders' who wander into international politics like buffalo in a china shop. I imagine the modus operandi on a national level isn't much different.

Delivering good speeches is one of the most important facets to being a political leader. For every aspect of government they're supported by an army of advisors who are infinitely more informed and knowledgeable in their fields than the president. His job is simply to prioritise, manage, lead an effective team. There too the republicans have fallen woefully short under Bush and Trump. Everything they touched has turned to shit, from the patriot act to this orangutan wanting to quell protests by sending in the military, to not even touch on his handling of the pandemic.

Ok, and you gave a nobel peace prize to a guy that turned 2 wars into 7, that bombed brown people every day of his presidency, that deported more people than any prior administration, that used his power as president to attempt to undermine and determine the election of his successor, who stood before the American people and told them that clinging to their guns and religion was wrong. The guy that unleashed the feminists and their kangaroo courts on college campuses. The guy that expanded the PATRIOT Act, domestic surveillance and killed two Americans without trial. The guy that oversaw domestic riots across the country and did nothing but mouth words about reforming cops. That guy?

Very odd that there's nothing about redlining that led to segregated neighborhoods or other systemic factors that have been to the detriment of the black community. Nothing about Indiana and Wisconsin's weak-ass gun laws.
