the weird thing is that practice was adopted to combat smog, but N95 masks don't do anything about particulates and the yellow cloud that regularly floods SK/japan from china.

it's like an accidental benefit.

Jay's weirdly quiet about his weird "tissue boxes on feet" comment from back earlier in the pandemic thread. "You must be delighted about this shit, newbie." Now he's wearing paper masks so he can "feel safe at the grocery store."

"Thanks, I know hand washing is the most important part." Fairly docile when compared to that former accusation.

You really do think this is the end of the world. I am glad I don't live in your head.

i don't think it's the end of the world. but it's nice to be informed. you know, science. facts.

i know you've ascended from that plane to the realm of sage libertarian wisdom, but i don't spend my days ignoring my screaming children and reading weirdo right-wing blogs.

something similar to this was actually very fashionable in south korea a few years ago. i can't remember what it was originally for. i want to say outdoor gardening? rice harvesting? anyway lots of urban-chic types were wearing giant visors around. it was like something from a william gibson novel.

i recall they were associated with old women because they used to wear them when doing backbreaking peasant labour in the sun.

It says it is a pollution mask. It can't hurt if used in combo with a regular breather.

Bought an online course for drone design, normal price $200, promo price $13.

Wanted to dip my toe in the water, and see what Udemy is like for the future, a few people I know have said they're hit and miss.
Also all the info in one spot and to compare with what I've picked up so far, which is out of date.

these were called 'ajumma caps'. that's the slang term for old ladies over there.

Four new tyres for the Subaru.

They were 5 years old and had 3-4mm of tread so would have been fine for a year or two, but I like a bit of margin beyond the legal limit and its worth having.
Difference at 80kmh in the wet. Also makes a huge difference to aquaplaning.

i got some new tyrolean shoes. norwegian welt. super fine french leather. thick latex soul (from Para). cork-filled footbed. hand-made in france using the same 120-something-step process they used when the shoe was introduced, in 1945. definite pretentious french tosser in a black-and-white godard film aesthetic. you either love them or hate them. i kinda love them.

the tyrolean is somewhere between a casual boat-shoe and a derby. they're really chunky and profile well with all sorts. wear as part of a suit/office attire or style with jeans. i got them in black as i have a hole in my wardrobe for a good smart, black shoe, one i'd want to wear on occasions other than job interviews and funerals. they come in really nice maroon/brown/green varieties too, though.

dilbert is right, most of my sick pleasure is mostly in unboxing things thesedays. i've got to get some sort of product out of the Amazon ...

The other half of the fun is reading the little notes they put in with your prize.

yes, the literature is quite nice. everything is 'heritage' nowadays, though, it does get a little wearisome. you're investing in a historical artefact, not a simple item.

Very nice, Uzi. I always get nervous buying any sort of fashion online, especially when it's on the expensive side. I like to try things on to see see the cut, the make, the match. Different if I'm buying a replacement item from the same maker. I can generally be assured of the quality and look if I've bought something similar from them before.

i'm the opposite, actually. going into brick-and-mortar stores is too much of a crapshoot of dealing with whatever sizes and options they happen to have in stock/left on the racks/unmolested by the filthy public. buying online gives you the full gamut of that season's range and stock options.

i only ever buy about 3-4 brands when it comes to clothing. it's all about finding the maker that suits your body-shape/outline and sense of 'fit'. some shops are just generally more baggy/loose, others more boxy, others go for slim silhouettes, etc, etc. i think i essentially locked in my basic fashion sense at about 19-20 and i've digressed from it very little. buy quality from trusted brands once every couple years. other than that, i prefer not to think about it. i never window-shop or just browse. 90% of the time it doesn't fit me.

the other thing is tailors, man. it's so cheap and easy to get things adjusted. i get most of my decent trousers and occasionally a jacket/coat adjusted. it cost like $15 and can take an off-the-shelf item to a next level.

plus with this style icon sporting them, it was a given.
