How come China has no more cases it isn't a big deal
It's a Russian-Chinese conspiracy
Have you ever read Mein Kempf the worlds heading that way now
I call it Chinavirus cause it came from China

herd immunity was the preferred method of choice in the UK for the first 2 weeks, too, until they actually properly modelled it and kept looking at the data coming in from elsewhere, and realised it was absolutely insane. it's basically making a political decision to commit to letting x % of people die, and in most cases that number was always in the 100,000s.

also herd immunity, like seasonal variation or long-term post-infection immunity, is totally unproven at this point.

Oh yes they mentioned herd immunity. Then started talking about an employee who saves his boogers to eat later.
Thought you all would like to know.

Partially. Offices were told to send at least 50% home. My office created alternating teams that come in on odd or even days.

not a good idea. Alternating teams daily still risks cross contamination between the teams. A better option would be to alternate weekly or give a day or two between teams coming in.

Agreed, but that decision was made above my pay grade. It also doesn't do a whole lot when the subcontractors I'm interacting with aren't maintaining the same type of protocol and are sending the same people to the job site every day.

i had to make the argument to my boss as well. I recommended 2 teams alternating weeks mon-thurs, with fri-sun as buffer between groups as a sort of sanitary measure. One manager for each team, the rest of the office works remotely.

Side note: MS Teams has such a terrible UI/UX. Utter fucking garbage.

Work said stay at home if you can, which is about no one here cause the systems so old and half the office staff have desktops.

i hate MS teams so much and my company switched to it about 6 months ago.

very bloated and buggy. i hate that it basically stays signed in on your local machine permanently, and if you force it to sign out and want to get back in ... oooh boy, hope you like authenticating every single morning.

hate their integrated skype so much. sure i've ranted about it here before. NO PUSH TO TALK. have fun in a conference call with 25 people with permanently open mics, unless they manually mute and unmute themselves by clicking the interface. stupid stupid stupid. ventrilo and teamspeak had basic P2T functionality in like 2003.

also all the extra kanban board-style stuff is otiose and redundant. being forced to interact with it is irritating.

i have two accounts for two separate business units i manage. I can log in to two team accounts on the mobile app, but not the desktop app. Since when does mobile integration work better than desktop?

the lack of push to talk/muting and unmuting mics is kind of an in-joke among all office workers. Breathing heavy, dogs barking, people doing dishes in the background, followed by the meeting moderator or someone else saying "please mute your mics if you are not talking". And then there's the instance where you are talking for 2 minutes before you realize you are on mute and people keep asking you "uzi, are you there?".

The best video conference/online meeting program I've used is Webex, but it's fairly expensive. I think we were paying around $3k/month for like 10 accounts.

cool, you're good for 6 days.

My dad was on a flight to Taiwan last night. He said everyone on the plane was wearing masks. Some were wearing standard N95, some were wearing painters masks, some were even wearing military grade NBC masks. He also said a lot of them were wearing raincoats/hoods, and some were even wearing biohazard suits.

Taiwan has one of if not the most aggressive and proactive plans in place to contain COVID-19. They learned from the SARS outbreak that because of their political standing, they are not members of most international health orgs so they must become self-sustainable in dealing with these types of epidemics. I think I heard they have something like 15-20 years of preparedness.

There is an article on the front page of the New York Times about how East Asian countries have mostly contained the outbreak. Apparently they are now adding travel restrictions on westerners to avoid reinfection. NYT also sent an alert to my phone letting me know Italy has had more deaths than China now. China is bad for civil rights and all but the fact that they seem to have a handle on this thing now is a credit to their culture and political system.

I am in self quarantine. I don't plan to travel.

They deserve no credit for their culture or political system. They originated this shit and infected the world. Fuck China.

but i thought it was nothing, jay?

also america is plenty good at originating its own epidemics. the last major novel flu epidemic of the 21st century was in america.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/ … n-12-weeks

so here we are. now we are having to pivot, after having badly lost ground, to a full-china policy. social distancing, quarantine, isolation and mass testing for 12 weeks.

how long until america realises it has to adopt mass testing like everywhere else in the world? even the aberrant views of BoJo's government have fallen in line now.

china do deserve credit where it is due. the government made a mistake but the chinese people suffered it, sacrificed, adapted. chinese scientists raced to share first news of the virus and to share information afterwards. chinese health workers worked themselves to exhaustion, many literally to death, to contain the spread of the infection. it took an immense human effort. 'fuck china' doesn't work. soon it will be 'fuck america' when the uncontrollable spread of the disease relocates itself once again from europe to north america.

yep, trump trying to blame china is very weak gravy. western medical authorities and agencies knew about a novel flu-like virus in china last year. it was no secret to them. the governments of the west, especially america, must take responsibility for their laxness.

People like Trump have a special talent for spinning the blame for things gone wrong onto someone else, the root cause here is China so thats easy.

Don't forget China disappeared and threatened a good number of medical people who were trying to deal with this in the early stages, now they're spreading misinformation and blame, and all the talents they brought to bear to eradicate the Chinese Bat-Flu they're using to eradicate the Uighurs.
Also they were very aggressive in locking down Wuhan, and equally aggressive in protecting their rights to travel anywhere in the world without restriction. Strange no?

Meanwhile the majority of Australian cases can be traced to people who visited America, yet we never had an America-specific travel ban or quarantine for political reasons.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-03-17/ … a/12060704

Given this its very likely US cases are many times higher than they think they are, although someone would have to look at current tourist and traveller figures.
Also we are going for herd immunity, just trying to flatten the infection curve below Johnson's original 'do nothing' plan.

again, nobody is praising the chinese government as a party. why you have to bring up the uighurs, heaven only knows.

the quite obvious point is that the whole world is going to have to work together on some level to beat this thing. i'm not sure any country 'working with' china is condoning their ethnic cleansing. why does it always have to be some racial-essentialist black-and-white world for you? it's very manichean.

it's weird you can then point out the hypocrisy/stupid thinking over the chinese flight ban. weren't you angry that china called your policy racist? hey look, two weeks later, it turns out it was racist and ineffectual. white people brought in it. well done dilbert. you'll learn eventually.

herd immunity is a byproduct of months of exposure to a virus without a vaccine/effective anti-viral. aiming for herd immunity by itself is stupid and pointless. the government loses control and the ability to track the disease's progression, meanwhile the number of avoidable deaths skyrockets, from corona and from congested healthcare system, with no clear measurable objectives in sight. everyone knows that herd immunity is probably A Thing here to some greater or lesser degree, but for it to be the core or lynchpin of a policy is madness. it has rightly been demoted.

Even if Australian politicians want to take a leaf out of China's book, it would be highly unlikely because the two countries have completely different systems of governments and different views on privacy.

For example, Chinese telecommunications companies — all state-owned — have to submit movement data for government apps that track where people have been.

And in some compounds, residents need to scan QR codes to show they haven't violated home isolation rules before they are allowed to enter.

....

Bonnie Glaser, director of the China Power Project at the Centre for Strategic International Studies in Washington DC, said Beijing could also use its response to the coronavirus to its advantage.

"I think that most people will say that the Chinese had a little bit of a slow start, but they ended up doing OK," she said.

"Xi Jinping will tell his people that their authoritarian system was a strength in wiping out the virus, and enabled them to do the kinds of things that democratic societies cannot do."
You're the one praising China's authoritarian - and effective - approach. You can't have it both ways.
