are we really talking about how cities are to blame for right-wing populism? you guys do realise the entire discipline of sociology was founded on this – very elementary – critique of urban living in the second industrial revolution? read some durkheim on anomie or simmel.

heaven forbid you discover marx/engels and their theories of alienation!

don’t confuse the refugee crisis with multiculturalism. most people electing right-wing nationalists into power in europe are working-class people who got sold down the river by the banking-european elites with their austerity. africans and arabs crossing the med are not the cause of their problems.
Yes, I'm sure the average member of the working class understands that its quantitative easing and the tax/spend ratio which affects them most, and aren't at all bothered by alien races and cultures invading their home town and committing crimes in their community.

People don't like it.

you’ll note that dilbert lives in arguably the most multicultural country in the world. arguably one of the healthiest and best-functioning democracies in terms of equality and social mobility. a country built by irish, english, greeks, vietnamese, chinese, etc. if multiculturalism is a woo act foisted on people by elites, why is it working so well there?
Because you're very familiar with Australia aren't you?

Australia and Australians expect immigrants to adopt Australian values. Anecdotally I know an Italian who named his sons Kevin and Eddy so they would fit in better, and the Cronulla riots are an example of the average Australian not tolerating 'multiculturalism' when it conflicts with Australian values.

The past government was elected on a platform of taking control of refugees, the current government was elected on a platform of cutting immigration and clamping down on boorish behaviour by immigrants by deporting them where possible.

You point to cities not being new, but they are. Up until the late 1800s anything taller than maybe 2 or 3 stories was a skyscraper. We're denser than ever and have more interactions on a daily basis.

I know that the push is for urbanization and the eradication of suburban sprawl but cities are fucking awful for mental health.
Urbanization means tall skyscrapers.

Our social interactions didn't change because we have more people living in cities. Ancient Rome is estimated to have been home to over a million, Constantinople boasted at least 600k at its height, Vienna was a major metropolitan centre in its prime Thousands of years earlier the cities of Mesopotamia weren't exactly tiny either.

Our interactions have changed because of the factors I mentioned before. There's others you can add to that list, but not simply the growth of cities & the population.

Those are all English speaking Protestant nations. Right wing and populist parties took control in a lot of other European and industrialized countries but without putting the most unqualified person (senile Donald Trump) in office or blowing up their political system (Brexit). English speaking countries seem unique in the fact that their citizens are willing to knowingly hurt themselves in order to stick it to cultural enemies.
I wonder if its coincidence that all three 'populist' outcomes are delivering tax cuts for the rich?

Recessions are inevitable. I just hope the one coming up happens closer to the election than now. But even if it does, Trump would still get like 40% of the vote and enough states to win because "we need a businessman to fix the economy".

it never ceases to amaze me how, across the western world, right-wing parties always get in by campaigning on the left/social democrats being hugely profligate spenders, financially irresponsible, etc etc, and then ... they hammer the deficit up far more themselves when in power.

in the UK we now have a conservative party that is trying to emphasise it is driving up public spending ... after they imposed a senseless and miserable decade of austerity on the nation, because of the previous social democrat’s ‘crazy public spending’. the trick would be shameless if it weren’t so effective. how do they get away with this smoke and mirrors shit every time?

Or maybe its another reason the average person probably shouldn't be allowed to vote.

Johnson is spending money which doesn't exist, Blair borrowed to fight Israel's war for them, Britain is proper fucked now.

'Senseless austerity' is me not having a Lamborghini when the bank has plenty of money for me to borrow.

Of the major candidates? None.

We can't do anything about climate change because we need to not alienate the voters who think climate change is 'gay hippie science' or a 'Chinese hoax'.

Or maybe because there is realistically nothing that can be done about it no matter what is done. Especially doesn't help that those who advocate for fighting climate change don't practice what they preach. Why bother listening to fuckers who don't listen to themselves?

The Democrats might as well do impeachment over the Ukraine thing. I don't think it will backfire like some people think. I don't think there is a single person on the fence about Trump that will suddenly decide to vote republican because they are upset about impeaching the house impeaching him.

There is a delusion among Democrats and Republicans about this whole thing though. Even if Trump is impeached the Democrats will still have to live with the people who voted him in and who will support the next Trump like person. The Republicans also need to understand that their position is unsustainable and even if they win the next election they will be ruling over a country that is increasingly hostile to their worldview. The Democrats had a super majority in the Senate a little over a decade ago. It's possible for them to get back into power and when they do they will treat Republicans and their supporters with the same contempt Trump did to them.
