Trump could gangland execute a reporter in the middle of a football stadium and wipe the spatter off with an American flag and Trump Republicans would still try and decipher a positive spin for it. He's like one of those microorganisms that coats itself with a discardable mucus shell as its defense mechanism.

Wtf are you talking about? Does firing a lying asshole constitute being unpatriotic? I guess I am unpatriotic if I don't want complete assholes that are part of our government. Let's have corrupt fuckheads rule us, that is so patriotic.

And I am not a Republican and am displeased with them too.

I don't care about the NFL knelling stuff. But holy shit are most of the "criminal justice reform" ideas bad. Social justice warriors aren't going to be happy until we let every criminal off with a slap on the wrist.

The problem isn't that there are too many black people in the criminal justice system. The problem is that there are a lot of White's who should be but aren't.

actually the crux of the problem is that there are a disproportionate amount of black people in the criminal justice system.  Read the New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander.  Pretty sure I mentioned it in a thread here.  Pretty eye-opening documentation of how post-civil war and post-jim crow south (and north, to an extent) used the US justice system to continue the subjugation of blacks.

There are so many issues with the criminal justice system in the US.  Its not merely a justice issue; it's a civil rights issue.

Well, while the crimes blacks tend to commit - rape, murder, drug use - have been heavily criminalised and get a lot of attention, white-folks crimes - corruption, fraud, child abuse - get a pretty easy ride (jew-crimes - theft, extortion and worshiping Satan - now being mainstream business practice).
So black do tend to get incarcerated more, and whats wrong with letting the free market deal with crime, even if it means inventing new crimes for people to commit so the prisons can be filled?
Its classic Libertarianism and supply/demand economics in action, business filling a gap which never existed before. In the long run it will all straighten itself out.

In the meantime I will continue to enjoy watching 'Cops' and seeing white kids getting a stern ticking off and black kids being slammed into the ground and sat on by a dozen  Iraq-war veterans with PTSD until they asphyxiate.

and yet students in the US continue to go to college in record numbers, taking out loans that they will spend years, even decades, paying off. Realising that the debt he would incur would be enough to buy a house in his Ohio hometown, Vance joined the marines instead. After his tour of duty, he went to college on the G.I. Bill. Like the welfare recipients he disdains, he too relied on the largesse of the state. For many students, loans aren’t sufficient to cover the expense of an undergraduate degree. Seventy per cent of US students work throughout college, an almost threefold increase since 1960; a quarter work more than twenty hours a week, while a fifth have full-time jobs. While at Ohio State, Vance took two jobs, one for a state senator, another at a local nonprofit. He slept three or four hours a night. A professor encouraged him to focus on his education; Vance ignored him, and ended up in hospital with a staph infection and glandular fever. Incredibly, the lessons he takes from all this are not that higher education is rigged in favour of the rich, or that state-funded universities suffer under austerity, but that hard work will be rewarded and payday lenders are a necessary lifeline.

So I read the article you posted and liked this line.

There is little irony in millennial memoirs and even less nihilism. Their authors tend to be earnest, and post-postmodern in their attachment to ‘meaning’. They believe in self-improvement: they preach psychotherapy; they laud temperance; they speak openly about their faith.
I am glad to see the phrase post-postmodern used in the same way it has been in my head for so long.

I like to study middle eastern conflict and noticed that despite the senior leadership of organizations like ISIS being Boomer and Gen X, they are overflowing with young people. Many of those young people gave up comfortable lives in order to "be a part of something" even if that 'something' seems awful to us. Same with the alt-right. They have the same problem with old leadership, though to a lesser extent, but still have millions of young guys ready to be "a part of something".

Now contrast all that to the nihilistic media of the 90's and early 2000's. You had people like Chuck Palahniuk who thought the worst thing in the world was a bunch of Starbucks all over the place meanwhile there are throngs of poor, sick, and dying people all over 90's America. A lot of the post modern stuff aged bad and is rightfully getting rejected by young people which is nice and not surprising.

it's a really good essay, actually. she must have read about 2,500 pages – most of it awful dreck – and condensed down the matter into a really pithy bit of analysis. glad you checked it/liked it.

and yes, post-postmodern in the sense of earnest, optimistic, 'wanting to fit in' with institutions rather than join a counter-culture or ridicule the institutions, i actually wrote about all this for my MA thesis many moons ago. it's not really a good progression (postmodernism was bad enough itself). though i think your characterisation about middle-east conflicts and people joining (violent) causes has a lot to do with young male psychology -- particularly now when the young western workforce aren't exactly inspired.

You should read it. Hillbilly Elegy was good.

lol. seems like a fairly archetypal type of text. i really very seldom read memoirs. it's an insipid genre, generally a genre-refuge for times when people can't get a good grip on capital-h History.

because that’s precisely what i said.

it may surprise you that 95% of writing that deals with ‘History’ in the large sense isn’t written by specialist professors, and isn’t necessarily even a ‘history book’ from the ‘history’ section. you really need to visit a bookstore. all i said was memoir is incredibly limited in scope – this is wot i dun and wot i thought about it – and is generally best left for the bedside table of bored housewives who are locked away all day.
