It's not happening. The UK Supreme court (one below the High Court, so not the final court of appeal) ruled that the referendum is invalid due to parliamentary sovereignty (ah doi).

So it's up to the MPs to trigger Article 50.

No, the court ruled that the PM could not push through article 50 without reference to parliament.

The referendum was perfectly valid, just not binding, and the PM can't just do whatever she wants without going through parliament.

the supreme court is much higher than the high court and is the final court of appeal (except the europeans on civil matters). it's kind of in the name. you don't have a 'supreme' court that is bound to a higher authority.

it's not exactly what you said, at all. you said it 'wasn't happening'. the only thing that isn't happening is the conservative, eurosceptic tory-right using a 2% result difference to trigger article 50 without parliamentary debate or consensus. the only thing that has been stalled by the supreme court is the right of the incumbent government to cite the article that will begin the UK's irremediable exit from europe. naturally, they are all claiming that 'brexit means brexit' and are using the referendum result as a mandate to fulfill the uk right's long-held wet dreams about leaving europe. the supreme court reminded them that a referendum is only advisory, not legally binding, and thus they cannot act as if they have an overwhelming prerogative.

who woulda thunk it, our democratic institutions preserve democracy from the whims of both despotism and populism. it's almost like everything is working as intended.

Older cousin won $700,000 in the NJ state lottery. Good for him. He decided to move to Texas with his girlfriend though and left his ex-girlfriend in NJ with their kid. So she is still a single parent or whoever she is living with is doing the role of dad for the kid.

I don't understand what would make someone think that is okay. It is not uncommon though. The amount of single parent households has increased from 20% to 30% in the last 36 years. We need to teach men better.

He's supposed to marry her?

Didn't have to marry her. Could have continued to live a 10 minute drive away from his kid instead of moving to the other side of the country.

What about divorced parents who live in separate countries due to work reasons. it happens.

If she really wanted to she could probably give him the kid to raise but bet she won't.

There is a big difference between moving for work and moving to Texas to buy a house after winning the lotto.

And I don't think mothers should be split off from their children like that. You sound like the kind of guy who thinks girls "should have just gotten an abortion"

My cousin knocked up some chick when they were both 18. She decided to move to another state as well and never had a job.

My parents were divorced and lived in separate countries. Welcome to life.

I'm sure your cousin wanted to get out of the shithole that is NJ.

I am sorry you come from a broken home. But there was literally no reason for this guy to move. He lived in the nice part of NJ, Hoboken.

anyway

the officer who shot a man in the back while he was running on video had a mistrial.

you can literally shoot a guy on video and there will be jurors who find the cop not guilty. amazing

The jury had three options, besides deadlocking: a conviction for murder, a conviction for voluntary manslaughter or an acquittal.

In a letter to Judge Newman on Friday, a single juror said he could not “in good conscience consider a guilty verdict.”

The jury could have decided to placate this one objector and press for voluntary manslaughter. They seem to have held their ground that it was a murder.

A mistrial is actually the best outcome, as the next set of jurors will hopefully deliver a unanimous decision and actually convict the officer of murder rather than the manslaughter option.

It seems in many trials there is 'that one juror' who won't follow the system due to their pre-existing beliefs.

i think you two are being overly optimistic. the one juror voted for total acquittal . i do not see the officer getting convicted on a murder charge in south Carolina.

or anywhere for that matter.  Police officers rarely get charged for using excessive force in shootings, and when they do get charged, they rarely get convicted of ANY charges.

I find it fucking hilarious that with all the crap they do broadcast, they still feel the need to cut away from verbal profanity.

Going to age out of my mother's healthcare plan on the Jan 1st. She is a state worker and her health insurance is A+. Really not looking forward to having to shop around and deal with all this insurance crap. This is doubly so considering I am dangerously mentally ill.
