WW2 had the highest ratio of armed forces to population (I think it was around 10% of total pop).  Using today's population (and assuming a 50/50 split of men and women enlisting/conscripted), that's 1.5M women out of 150 million.  I'm assuming you understand math since you aren't poor, but just in case, that leaves a lot of women babymakers left.

That assumes any new war would buck the historical trend of using less actual soldiers (in relation to the size of the population) than before.

Maybe it's because you haven't read a book since you were 22 and still believe all the childish shit your professors taught you in sociology 101.

I can't recall ever taking a sociology class in my life.

I read about 30 books a year.  A somewhat even distribution of non-fiction and classical literature.  The last book I read was Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy.  He's probably my favorite contemporary author.  I was debating with myself whether or not I want to dive into Ulysses again.  I'll let you know.

I'm also going to read some Hemingway in the next two weeks to prepare me for Pamplona.

Tell me more #storeys about your life experience!

You don't get it. I'm talking about total war here. Not Iraq in 2003 or Syria 2017.

Total war - one side will nuke or nerve-gas the other before they even know whats happened.
If not then everyone will be fighting or displaced. There won't be much baby-making going on.

Because if I'm to be ruled I would rather it be by the dumb fuck politician I can vote out of office than by the dumb fuck bureaucrat I can't.

except the brexit types put their faith in trade and denuded notions of 1980s free-market economics, whereas remain'ers entrust civic institutions to regulate and protect wherever possible. that's what this ultimately comes down to. it's not about 'unelected politicians' (this is continuously and always overplayed: most european politicians are elected, just in elections that seemingly hardly any national public gives a fuck about; senior bodies are elected then from that body of european MPs; it's about as indirect and unaccountable as a prime minister forming a cabinet).

if britain cuts loose from the 'omg red tape' of europe, we're gonna be floating free to be ass-fucked by heinous arrangements like TTIP. also the UK itself will crumble.

It's your country and your vote, but I'd rather not be tied to 27 other countries all moving at odds with each other and throwing up protectionist red tape for their own home industries at every turn. To me it's a simple vote about self determination and home rule, with all the pluses and minuses that go with that.

Won't UK industries still have to go through that red tape if they want to do business in the EU?  Or does an EU exit automatically exempt them from those protectionist rules?

no. what happens is we leave the EU and become a country more like albania, or somewhere in the balkans. we leave one set of protectionist trade rules and treaties and de facto enter into the nexus of world trade agreements that are far less advantageous for the UK labour force. great idea.

Isn't Russia funding a lot of these anti-EU groups? Shouldn't that be a concern?

there's a strong chance that, if the UK as one of the 'major players' pulls out of europe, it will set a precedent for ultra-nationalists to gain traction in every other major power. europe until now hasn't had this kind of shake-up. it could undermine the whole project.

is europe flawed? yes. does it need reforms? yes. the alternative is we revert to a nation-state model in a very competitive region with hundreds of different cultures, languages, and ethnicities coexisting on top of one another. a region that never enjoyed lasting peace until the formation of the EU. the nation state model itself looked bankrupt after two world wars driven by imperialism and nationalism. add to that potential power vacuum the fact that putin wants to cynically manipulate and undermine europe's political bloc as much as possible. a shattered and divided europe is going to play right back into his geopolitical game in the central and eastern european states.

but yeah, it sucks being ruled by those evil technocrats in belgium with their ludicrous regulations on bananas and their agricultural subsidies!

How much of this is related to the migrant crisis? Doesn't the EU force countries to take them? Or is this whole thing just a coincidence?

Do people know there still will be regulations on bananas that some agency will make up?

EU doesn't force any countries to take anyone. It becomes a problem when say germany is opened borders for refugees when their neighbours have to deal with all the logistics along the way.
