Remember when they were trying to convince everyone in the mid 2000s that GTA was responsible for alot of violence? gaming criticism and 'serious' study of games as art is still in a very amateur and kind of hokey stage. most of the people breaking into the academe doing it got their doctorates from shitty institutions and work in terrible, contempo/modern colleges with not very exacting standards.
in general it's good the ball is moving and gaming is maturing in that way, but i can see why some - a very small, reasoned minority - got a bit tetchy about some amateur art critic wading into a medium she knew nothing about to make some unwieldy social commentary.
