"Gamers" are just upset that feminist and other movements got involved with video games and try to change the concept of "gamer" to something that is more inclusive and in their image
Everyone wanted videogames to be considered an art form but then got really mad when people started to seriously critique and analyze them.
So yeah. Really stupid
sarkeesian's actual 'critique' and analysis wouldn't pass the rigour of any other academic discipline, but basically yeah.
gaming criticism and 'serious' study of games as art is still in a very amateur and kind of hokey stage. most of the people breaking into the academe doing it got their doctorates from shitty institutions and work in terrible, contempo/modern colleges with not very exacting standards.
in general it's good the ball is moving and gaming is maturing in that way, but i can see why some - a very small, reasoned minority - got a bit tetchy about some amateur art critic wading into a medium she knew nothing about to make some unwieldy social commentary.
at least that's my take on the whole imbroglio (didn't really pay that much attention, mercifully).
