Yes. I can see the World Trade Center from my corner. There is a lot of development going on because I live in a good part of New Jersey. The city is threatening and using eminent domain to grab property cheaply for developers to build "luxury" apartments. They give them tax deals that absolve them from paying property taxes for 50 years. The developers then turn around and rent the small apartments to out of towners for as much as you would pay a mortgage because they come with a parking spot and a community gym. That is the city's idea of subsidizing housing.
I understand you can't stop gentrification but it is very annoying to see the town's leaders sell out the people who have been living here forever in order to attract wealthy outsiders who can fund their state elections. So keeping rent down so natives aren't priced out of town is important to me.
