Seeing as this place is dead, and this is the only way anyone will see my message...

I heard BF2 was closing down or some shit, wouldnt mind having a play before it disappears, anyone care to give me a key to this ancient game?

Yes, GameRanger already works for BF1942.

Apparently, EA are working to shift BF2, BF2142 and BC2 from Gamespy to Origin.

Also, I'd suggest getting BF2 on Origin.
It's only €10 there, as opposed to €20 on Steam.
Both for the Complete Collection, which includes Special Forces as well.
(And both booster packs, which are free since v1.51 anyway.)

This make me nervous, I hope they can keep the menu and all that shit the way it is and just host the servers through Origin.

Chances are small to non-existent that EA will use Steamworks as the server-client framework to use in BF2 once Gamespy is down.

I prefer Steam as well, but I can totally understand EA or Ubisoft that they don't want another middleman getting a (supposed) 30% cut on each sale and also disallows any in-game sales that circumvent that 30% cut.

And the thing is, you can only play one game at a time.
Ressource-wise it doesn't really bother me leaving both Steam and Origin running in the background and if necessary, I can close it down.
Besides, Steam has somewhat grown into a ressource-hungry behemoth, with too many features that I don't really use and sluggish loading times.

Ubisoft's thing doesn't even let you buy games on it yet does it?

The in-game overlay also doesn't even have a browser yet afaik, every game should have that now. It doesn't make or break the game but it's always great to have if you need to get to find a walkthrough or look something up real quick. Origin's even got one.
