Anyone keeping up with the Whitey Bulger trial? For those not in the know: Whitey was a Boston mob boss who was arrested 2 years ago after 16 years on the run. His crime career was the inspiration for Jack Nicholson's character in the movie the Departed.

dude you care about the monarchy and royal families of europe more than 99.999% of "subjects" here in europe do. you're the one pissing thousands of hours into fucking medieval war games, elaborate role-playing fantasies with royal dynasties. you're the one reading royal history and imbibing long lists of royal lineages and wars and battles. you're the one asking esoteric questions about the european aristocracy in a trivia thread that was pretty much given over to 60% questions about royalty.

shut the fuck up, you're obsessed with royalty and you know it.

oh and saying it's "un-american" is about the most meaningless criticism to give to a european, anyway. the last thing on earth any european would want to be likened to is an american.

how am i out of touch? i don't give a shit about the monarchy. literally nil. they don't affect me and i find the royal baby thing tiresome. look at dauntless's anecdote above, about an american on the phone asking him about 'baby watch'. the truth is foreigners love this stuff more than the average brit does. to them the royalty is a novelty and a fascination - an intrigue. look at macbeth spending thousands of hours playing royalty simulation games about the the age of kingdoms/empire in europe. he's a history nut for that stuff. most british people are not.

so how am i out of touch?

Because 99% of Americans think it's hilarious that you guys still have royalty.  You make it sound like all us Americans have our noses smashed against a TV set waiting to see THE FUTURE KING!  The only reason it's somewhat of a big deal here is because it's a big deal there.

Enjoy your new quasi-powerless overlord tourist attraction.

it's a media thing. very few people here give a shit. sure you get the sad people waiting around outside the palace, but that's like crowds that like to be 'part of something'. the sort that want to be able to say 'they were there'. they don't go home to living rooms hung with royal portraits or anything. they're just people joining in the buzz and excitement of a 'national event'. the monarchy here are so irrelevant. you talk about their "powerlessness" like it's even a point. we settled their powers centuries ago. it is completely passé to us.

oh and you never said why i'm out of touch?

oh and i never said all americans are crazy about it. i just said some of you have way more enthusiasm for it than your average brit. we live with them all of our lives. it is not some huge novelty or excitement when they are in the news. it's just background filler.

Major, developed countries successfully banning online porn would almost certainly lead to innovation and the mainstreaming of privacy tools that could keep our governments from illegally spying on us.

A successful filter, if only it were possible, would result in some of the more arcane privacy tools that are currently the domain of the more tech-savvy – Internet protocol spoofing, domain name system changing, virtual private networks – becoming cheaper and more user-friendly. Such tools are already emerging in the form of apps such as Hotspot Shield, or Toronto-based SurfEasy, but the more the general public learns about and adopts encryption of their online activity, the better they’ll be able to keep the NSA and other government snoopers out of their business.

As misguided as the intentions of Cameron are, I think this will end up being a good thing if they go through with it. The internet is just too flexible for a weak ban like that to actually work and it'll end up making people more tech- and privacy-savvy.

You should visit Texas sometime.  You would enjoy it.  I could show you the time of your life.

i've already had the time of my life and there's nothing you could show me that i haven't seen 10x crazier, anyway pounding beers with rednecks is not exactly as extreme as some of the shit you will see in a world's capital. i know you probably think your life is sooo macho and all but leave it to the effete city-slickers to take debauchery to true levels of fucked-up extremity. i think some parts of london at 5am will make you think twice about how 'hardcore' texas is.

2 of my friends and their kid were in the plane crash at laguardia yesterday. Kids fine, the other two have whiplash and were just released from the hospital. Thank god it wasn't worse!

Whiplash? What a bullshit medical condition. Were your friends on the phone with a lawyer while they were still evacuating the plane?

Knowing my friend, it's a legit injury, and that she will sue Southwest for everything she can.

For someone who seems to be all about open mindedness and culture, you sure are being close minded about the humble fun we have here.

Granted, there isn't a Louve or some gigantic dance party club here like you are used too, but we have fun in different ways.  Ways I promise you've never experienced and would probably frown upon until you actually did it and realized just how fun it is.
