it's funny how people whine about the quality of this forum dying, but then you three gangbangers clutter up every thread with your dick-riding snigger-fests. EM has added absolutely nothing to this thread except the gurgling sound that your dick makes as it hits his epiglottis.

Walmart doesn't like that bill...

Death and Taxes on Walmart + DC Bill wrote:

Washington D.C. is considering enacting a new law called the “Large Retailer Accountability Act,” which would require retail chains with corporate sales exceeding $1 billion dollars a year to pay employees a living wage of $12.50 an hour. Walmart, the country’s largest employer– which had planned to open six stores in the D.C. area– has vowed to nix plans for three of these stores should these laws come to pass.

Alex Barron, a Walmart regional general manager, penned a positively nauseating op-ed for the Washington post, stating that the law unfairly “discriminates against business,” and, essentially, that D.C. residents should be thrilled at the prospect of all the great jobs Walmart could give them. Great jobs that basically pay nothing. The company clearly sees itself as doing people a great big favor by coming into their community. However, if D.C. is anything like Chicago, it’s likely that residents really don’t want them there in the first place.

Here’s the thing– we all pay for Walmart’s low, low prices one way or another– even if we don’t shop there. Walmart’s paltry wages are subsidized by social programs like food stamps and Medicaid, because there is literally no way that even the thriftiest human being could get by on them. A recent study showed that the company’s low wages cost taxpayers an average of $420,000- $900,000 per store a year. Meanwhile, Michael Duke, the company’s CEO, earns more in an hour than most Walmart employees will make in a year. The average CEO’s pay has increased by 725% since 1978, which is 127 times faster than worker’s pay has increased. These companies do not screw over their workers and pass the savings on to you, the consumer. They keep it for themselves and charge you whatever they think you are willing to pay for things.

Call me a crazy socialist, but I believe that a person working full-time ought to be able to support themselves and live reasonably above the poverty line. A person working full time at the minimum wage in this country will make $15,080 a year– if they’re supporting a child or anyone besides themselves, that is technically below the poverty line. It’s not just teenagers that are working these minimum wage jobs, either– 26% of our workforce makes below $10.55 an hour. If the minimum wage from the 70s had increased with inflation, the current minimum wage would be $10.71 an hour.

Walmart workers are banned from collective bargaining as well, which makes it easier for the company to keep wages down. As much as it’s easy to say “Oh, well, if they were paying their workers too little, then no one would take a job there! It’s the glorious invisible hand of the free market at work!,” it’s also crappy to take advantage of people in bad financial situations. It’s also not good for our economy when the CEOs of these companies are reaping the profits of these low wages. It’s likely that if Michael Duke gives himself a raise, he’s not going to go out and spend the crap out of it. He will probably save it. If you increase a low wage worker’s salary, they will likely spend a higher percentage of that, thus stimulating the economy.

I think it’s fair to say to Walmart that we, the taxpayers, do not want to help you subsidize your workers’ paychecks so that your executives can keep all that money to themselves. I think it’s fair to say that no, we don’t want your low, everyday prices if you are going to treat American workers as shabbily as you do. If every community did this, then Walmart would have no choice but to pay its employees a decent wage.

They should lower minimum wage as an incentive to not make minimum wage.

I typed a big thing, but I erased it because people on this forum would have shit themselves and I would spend the next three days fending off attack posts, misquotes and people taking me out of context.

I'd much rather insult Uzi anyways.  Way easier.

Walmart took their stores to places where they wouldn't be legally obligated to pay 150% of the "minimum" required wages.  Does that surprise anyone?  The company sought out the must profitable places to build, and after DC decided to single them out, they left.

Would you want to do business in a place where the local government made a law specifically to make you pay more for labor?

I just find it funny that it's always the people who do not give two shits about small businesses suddenly start whining when Walmart wants to open a store in their city. They pass law after law after law making it more and more difficult to operate a business (every bit of regulation favors big businesses, which have teams of lawyers that can be devoted to filling out compliance paperwork), but Wallyworld comes a knockin' and suddenly they're all for the little guy. They bring up stuff about how Walmart destroys neighborhood businesses while ignoring the fact that consumers have a choice where they shop. They don't have to ignore their local bodega and shop at Walmart, but for the most part they do because it's really fucking convenient to shop for everything in one trip. Shopping sucks. Having to go to seven different stores when one will suffice sucks even harder. It's why internet commerce took off in such a huge way. The fact that the prices are lower is a bonus.

I also really hate the stupidity that people present when they moan about small businesses closing in Walmarts wake. So what? Small businesses fail all the time. It's not like the job market is static and the jobs that exist today are the only jobs that will ever exist. Small towns do not morph into South Park, where everyone is either out of work or working for Walmart. New jobs get created every day. If they can't beat Walmart on price, they can surely do it with service (Aside from the utter assholes who go to the small shops to gain knowledge or see something in person and then proceed to buy elsewhere for a cheaper price, those people suck).

tldr: Walmart provides a service, is not evil, and the people whining about the corporation know nothing about economics.

Big businesses provide more and better jobs than the small and ever beloved small businesses. Most small businesses only enrich the owners and often suck money out of places without ever making local investment.

small business owners tend to circulate their money back into the immediate community and local economy a lot better than walmart CEO's, though.

Do they? What a weak argument.

Why should anyone buy local? Why cut your own throat to put a Jaguar in some small business owners driveway? If I can't get exactly what I want locally I will drive elsewhere to get it or order it online. I'm loyal to a business for as long as it takes for them to ring up my transaction and me to walk out the door. That's the way it should be. You want my business? Earn it by having what I want at a price I'm willing to pay. For as much as I personally despise Walmart, they get that right for the people that do choose to shop there.
