what do you need all that to play league of legends for?

There are a lot of hybrid drive options nowadays. I'd probably go with one of those instead of saddling myself with a 250GB primary.

SDD + HDD is a good choice, however I would get the 840 pro, not just the regular 840 (530MB/s and 240MB/s + 3 year warranty vs 540MB/s and 520MB/s + 5 year warranty). I'd also avoid Toshiba HDDs as they can be a little funky, and the amount of failed Toshiba HDDs I've seen is a little ridiculous. I'd grab a 3TB Seagate Barracuda personally.

I'd also get 2x8GB RAM instead of 4x4GB, to leave upgrading open later down the track. yes you probably won't need to later, but you might as well leave yourself open to it.

The case choice seems a little odd to me. If you love the look of it etc then by all means go for it. But unless you are running multi-GPU and water cooling setup, there really isn't much need for a Full tower case that is that large. The price also seems a bit out of step with the rest of the build.

I'm not 100% sure with that PSU, you might want to check the cable length because a full tower case + a psu model with short cables may not be the best.

Thanks for the advice, no I don't really have a set budget in mind but as you can see aiming for a system to go with a 4770k

I think I will go for the 840 pro, so thanks for pointing that out. I feel like HDD brand reliability seems to be mostly pot luck, but for some reason I still prefer WD and I've had one fail on me so what's that about? Anyway I'll take your advice and go with Seagate as it's only £4 for the same spec.

I changed the memory from 2X8GB to 4X4GB just before I posted actually, and that was because I noticed the timings for the 8GB sticks were 10-10-10-28 and the 4GB sticks were 9-9-9-24 and it was about the same price so I went for the lower timings. I know that's not going to make a huge amount of difference but I probably won't upgrade to more than 16GB with this PC anyway.

As for the case, I'm really having trouble finding something I like. I just want something solid and plain, I like the look of this but a few reviewers have said the air flow wasn't great and it could get pretty hot, I'm going to overclock so I changed to something with more airflow, still not decided but I have until next week to make up my mind.

A friend with a similar setup recommended the PSU, but cable length isn't something I'd thought about so I'll make sure I check that.

someone talk some sense into this lad. he's a fashionista who has lost his way. one too many sessions on the tanning beds have done his nut in. £275 quid for a case! he's barmy. it's not a designer handbag, dauntless. no one is going to see it. take bugz' fuckin' advice. the better part of £300 spent on a metal aluminium shell for a £1k pc build is stupid. especially when you're not going to use that tower's space or spec. you are just buying it because you like its surface-appearance more than the others. that's a big premium man. compromise. it's going to be out of sight, unnoticed, for 95% of your pc's lifespan.

Thanks for the suggestions, they're both in the ballpark of what I'm after. Although, and I don't mean to sound too picky or ungrateful but I'm not a big fan of doors on cases. My current case has a door and I could do without it. Also I think I want something aluminium coloured.

I've been going round and round trying to decide if I should just spend a hundred or so extra and get something I really like or if I should just get over it and buy something cheaper.

Right now I've had a bit of a change of heart and decided on this which I don't really love but I guess it'll do.

Otherwise it seems the 1600Mhz 2x8GB patriot is 9-9-9-24, its the 1866Mhz 2x8GB that is 10-10-10-28

Yeh that does look ridic but I won't be looking at it anyway eh.

Actually I meant to add the 1866Mhz memory, the 1600Mhz was added by mistake so my options were either 9-9-9-28 or 10-10-10-28

Though for the same price I could go for this which is 2133Mhz (and 11-11-11-27), but the trade-off in latency is probably worth it right?

the 840 pro looked like it was on overclockers yesterday but I can't find it now, so I changed the SSD to the sandisk extreme which has similar speeds

• I would probably wait your week or so for the Haswells if you really want one, so you can do proper looking into balancing costs on the Z78 motherboards and the new CPU's.
• For RAM, go with 2x8GB low profile (DDR3 1600 / PC3 12800) (CAS 7 or 8)  and be sure it appears on the motherboard mfg's up-to-date memory QVL (or you've otherwise had them confirm compatibility). If you need more than 16GB on that machine later, you can upgrade. Meanwhile, less can go wrong with two sticks than with four. Tall heat sinks on the RAM are ok as long as you do your measurements and make sure they'll fit with any bulky CPU cooler you decide to install.
• For the chassis, Lian Li is great. There are other good options, but they're still one of my favorite. But take a look at their lineup for mid towers. Unless you're going to be doing some hefty air or water cooling, you aren't going to need full size, and a mid is still easy to work in. Check out the Lian Li PC-A05FNB for £70.
• Please decide whether or not you really need absolute SSD for your primary drive. Hybrids are much cheaper than pure SSD's as far as price/GB is concerned.
• You mentioned that you're keeping your current video card. Is your PC broken? Do you really need a new PC for what you're doing with it?
• For PSU's, at the moment I would recommend one of the "mid-to-high-end" PC Power & Cooling models, like the PPCMK3S750 (if you can get a hold of it). Everyone's going to have their favorites, but this one is currently mine. Aesthetically, it shouldn't look out of place inside the Lian Li mentioned.
• Put as much effort as you can to keeping all of your additional fans at close to the same RPM as possible if they aren't being micromanaged by your machine. This will cut down on some of the extra noise. Ultimately, [u]don't[/i] install any extra fans unless you're actually needing them. I don't know about you, but the droning hum can get on my nerves in a quiet room.
